naturally sourced and sustainably harvested
Xylitol is a plant-derived sugar alcohol used in many oral care products to improve flavor and support oral health. In Davids formulas, xylitol in toothpaste helps reduce harmful bacteria and encourages saliva production, thus supporting a cleaner, less acidic mouth environment.
Davids xylitol is not just good for your teeth; it's also good for the planet. We source our xylitol from birch trees that grow abundantly and sustainably right here in the USA, ensuring premium quality and lower environmental impact.
Ingredient Spotlight
Xylitol is a sugar found in fruits and plants that’s widely used as a safe, well-tolerated sweetener. In toothpaste, xylitol helps minimize plaque, freshen breath, and promote enamel-friendly conditions, especially when paired with remineralizing ingredients like nano hydroxyapatite (nHA).
- Reduces levels of harmful bacteria in the mouth
- Stimulates saliva flow to rinse debris and help maintain a neutral pH
- Works with nHA to support enamel remineralization
- Naturally sweetens formulas without artificial sweeteners or sugar
- Sourced from birch trees for sustainability and traceable supply
what is xylitol?
Xylitol (pronounced zai-luh-taal) is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol discovered in the 19th century and used in foods and oral care for about 50 years.
Unlike cane sugar or honey, xylitol does not feed cavity-causing bacteria. Davids uses birch-derived xylitol, an abundant and fast-growing source, so our supply is both high quality and more planet-friendly than many alternatives.
how does it work?
Xylitol works in two ways in toothpaste. First, it interferes with the metabolism of harmful bacteria (notably Streptococcus species), effectively “starving” them and reducing acid production that leads to plaque and decay. Studies show xylitol can reduce harmful bacteria by 27–75%.
Second, xylitol stimulates saliva flow, which helps wash away food particles, neutralize acids, and deliver minerals that support enamel.
Is xylitol good for your teeth? Research and clinical experience suggest that it supports cavity prevention, fresher breath, and a more balanced mouth environment when used regularly.
is xylitol in toothpaste safe?
We include xylitol across our dental care products because of its measurable oral health benefits and clean safety profile. Xylitol in toothpaste is safe for most people, including children, and is FDA-approved as a food additive.
However, some people may have sensitivities or allergies to xylitol, and xylitol is toxic to dogs, so keep your toothpaste away from pets. That being said, our xylitol is birch-sourced, high-quality, and paired with naturally sourced premium ingredients to deliver gentle, effective daily care.
