what is nano hydroxyapatite?

performance not percentage focused
Many brands put a large focus on the percentage of nano hydroxyapatite in their formula, using old research to try and convince consumers that this is the only factor to consider. Companies who focus solely on percentage should be examined carefully
Some competitors use a higher percentage, but lower grade, so the overall performance is actually lower....higher percentage does not mean better. Because of this, we do not encourage people to shop based on percent of hydroxyapatite being used, as this is often times used to mislead consumers.
size
Not all hydroxyapatite toothpastes are created equal. Just because a tube claims to contain “hydroxyapatite” doesn’t guarantee it has the same effective ingredients as others. Only nano-sized hydroxyapatite particles (approximately 50 nm) are small enough to penetrate dentin tubules and repair microscopic enamel cracks. Some brands use larger micro-hydroxyapatite or even calcium carbonate coated with hydroxyapatite, which can be up to 100 times larger than the particle size proven to be effective. For optimal tooth remineralization and sensitivity relief, it’s essential to choose products with the right particle size and formulation.
shape
Nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) comes in various shapes, such as rods, circles, needles, and irregular forms. However, only rod-shaped nHA has been approved for use in oral care products, and has been shown to be the most effective for remineralizing enamel and repairing tooth structure.
Unfortunately, some companies use needle-shaped particles, which have raised safety concerns and are even banned in the EU due to potential risks of cell damage. For the safest and most effective oral care, it’s essential to choose products with rod-shaped nHA particles.
surface
For optimal effectiveness and safety, nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) used in oral care products must be uncoated and unmodified, in line with SCCS guidelines. Coatings or surface modifications can interfere with nHA’s natural ability to integrate with tooth enamel, potentially reducing its remineralizing power.
By adhering to these strict standards, only uncoated nHA ensures that the particles work as intended, safely repairing and strengthening teeth without introducing unnecessary additives or altering their natural properties. For the best results, choose products that comply with these regulations for maximum safety and performance.
superior performance
You'll notice we don't mention percentage anywhere when it comes to what to look for in nano hydroxyapatite products. This is because percentage is a bad metric and, more often than not, just marketing.
Having a higher percentage doesn't mean higher effectiveness.
Instead you should focus on the performance of the toothpaste based on independent lab testing.

what sets Hydroxi™ apart
Even though nano hydroxyapatite is the star of our Hydroxi™ products, to be as effective as possible, it needs to have a great supporting cast.
The true secret of Hydroxi™ is in the high quality, carefully selected and sourced natural ingredients we use in our proprietary formulation. These ingredients work together with the nano hydroxyapatite to deliver unmatched performance.
lab results show the difference

independent third party testing
Davids sent new, unopened, samples of multiple leading toothpastes including Apagard Premio, Boka, Colgate Sensitive, Risewell, Sensodyne Pronamel, and Tom's of Main Sensitive along with Davids Hydroxi™ sensitive+whitening to a leading independent lab to compare results
Hydroxi™ is the clear winner
After 5 days of brushing Davids Hydroxi™ toothpaste shows the greatest improvements in remineralizing the enamel and fully occluding the dentin tubules that cause sensitive teeth. The results speak for themselves.
results by the numbers
After five days of lab testing, the samples were given a score between 1 and 5 with 1 being the highest score and 5 being the lowest. Only Davids Hydroxi™ scored a 1. The rest of the results were as follows:
Apagard - 2.06 / Boka - 3.44 / Colgate - 2.56 / Risewell - 2.06 / Sensodyne - 2.00 / Tom's of Maine - 3.39

FAQ
What is Hydroxi™
Hydroxi™ is Davids proprietary blend of nano hydroxyapatite and natural ingredients, formulated for superior oral health.
how does Hydroxi™ compare to fluoride?
Unlike fluoride, Hydroxi™ is biocompatible, non-toxic, and actively repairs enamel rather than chemically hardening it. Fluoride doesn't directly replace the lost minerals, but it helps protect teeth from decay by encouraging the absorption of calcium and phosphate from saliva and other sources. This forms a protective layer of fluoridated apatite on the tooth surface. In contrast, Hydroxi™ directly replenishes lost minerals to repair demineralized areas beneath the enamel and fills tiny fissures on the enamel's surface. Additionally, its nanoparticles bind to proteins, such as oral bacteria and plaque fragments, during brushing, helping to remove them from the mouth when rinsing.
what makes Davids with Hydroxi™ different from other hydroxyapatite products?
Hydroxi™ combines the safest and most effective nano hydroxyapatite with synergistic natural ingredients to outperform competing hydroxyapatite products.

Yes, Hydroxi™ is gentle, effective, and safe for all ages, making it an ideal fluoride alternative for children.

Yes, Hydroxi™ is derived from natural sources (no animal byproducts) aligning with Davids commitment to sustainability and clean ingredients.
what % of nano hydroxyapatite do you use for your toothpaste products that include this ingredient?
The manufacturer of our nano hydroxyapatite, and the SCCS, recommend a percentage lower than 10% to be effective, which is what we adhere to. However, it is important to note that higher percentages do not mean better performance. Any product that focuses on percentage of nHA should be looked at carefully, because they are likely using lower cost micro hydroxyapatite. Davids focuses on the performance of our products, not the percentage.
