So without further ado, let's dive into the top five things you need to know about nano-hydroxyapatite! Plus, explore how our unique Hydroxi™ formula outshines the competition, raises the bar in the world of holistic oral care, and supports stronger, healthier smiles for you and your entire family.
1: nano-hydroxyapatite is safe, as long as it’s SCCS-certified like our Hydroxi™ formula
Compared to fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite is the new kid on the block. With any new product (especially one you put in your mouth every single day), it’s natural to wonder if it’s safe or not!
So, is nano-hydroxyapatite safe? The answer is yes!
We, alongside the EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), are here to ease your nerves about the safety of this incredible ingredient. If you haven’t heard of them before, the SCCS is an independent group of experts managed by the European Commission. Through careful research, they provide opinions on the health and safety of non-food consumer products like cosmetics, clothes, personal care products, and more.
They recently published an opinion on the safety of nano-hydroxyapatite! Based on the latest data, the SCCS considers nano-hydroxyapatite safe if it meets the following conditions.
- The nano-hydroxyapatite particles are rod-shaped.
- The particles have a certain length-to-width ratio.
- The particles are uncoated or surface modified.
- The nHAp concentration is 10% or less in toothpaste.
- The nHAp concentration is 0.465% or less in mouthwash.
Rest assured that the nano-hydroxyapatite particles used in Davids’ Hydroxi™ formula meet all these conditions!
It’s worth noting that there’s only one nano-hydroxyapatite manufacturer worldwide that complies with these strict conditions. Because we care so deeply about ingredient quality and integrity at Davids, we source our nano-hydroxyapatite from this manufacturer.
In this recent opinion, the SCCS confirmed that nano-hydroxyapatite particles that are needle-shaped are still not considered safe. This is because needle-shaped nano-hydroxyapatite particles may pose a risk of toxicity and absorption in a manner that’s not safe for human use. This is why it’s so important to understand and trust the source of nano-hydroxyapatite in your daily products!
2: Hydroxi™ is also non-toxic and biocompatible
Now that we’ve covered the safety of our nHAp formula, let’s touch on a couple more safety-related things that make it so special. Unlike other sensitivity ingredients (like fluoride), Hydroxi™ is non-toxic and biocompatible. What exactly does that mean?
- Non-toxic means that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.
- Biocompatible means this special formula will do its job without causing any unexpected side effects when it touches the cells, tissues, systems, etc. in your body.
This is great news for you and your whole family! You can enjoy peace of mind knowing you and your little ones won’t experience any unwanted side effects, which is super important when it comes to oral care products you use in your daily rituals (for the rest of your life).
3: why hydroxyapatite wins the hydroxyapatite vs fluoride debate
how fluoride falls short
For decades, fluoride has been the superstar remineralizing ingredient in the dental care world. It’s celebrated for its proven ability to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. It does so by using your saliva to “blend” calcium and phosphate to create a substance called fluorapatite.
While it’s effective at remineralizing enamel to treat and prevent tooth sensitivity and decay, here are a few things to consider about fluoride.
- biological limitations: the effectiveness of fluoride can depend on your saliva, which must be rich in calcium and phosphate to form fluorapatite. If your saliva has a low phosphate or calcium concentration (or if you experience dry mouth), fluoride toothpaste and other fluoride products might be ineffective.
- a delicate balancing act: optimal levels of fluoride will depend on your unique oral microbiome and saliva makeup/production. It can be hard to strike the best level of fluoride for your mouth. Too little fluoride won’t provide the desired benefits, while too much fluoride can be harmful (which we’ll touch on next).
-
safety concerns: there are many safety concerns associated with fluoride overexposure, which isn’t a great trait for an ingredient you might use every day in your oral care routine. Research suggests too much fluoride (through drinking water, oral health care products, and more) poses a risk of:
- Dental fluorosis, which can appear as white spots on your teeth
- Skeletal fluorosis, which can appear in the form of joint pain and stiffness
- Neurological complications (in some serious cases)
With these limitations in mind, it’s worth exploring a smarter, safer alternative for dental health and enamel remineralization.... one that works with your body, not against it. Enter nano-hydroxyapatite!
how nano-hydroxyapatite raises the bar
Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite makes up 97% of your natural enamel (and a large percentage of your bone composition, too). Nano-hydroxyapatite is simply a refined, smaller version of the hydroxyapatite that already exists in your teeth! The nano-sized particles can penetrate deeper into your enamel and dentin to repair damage and remineralize weakened areas very efficiently. Here are a few more features of this amazing ingredient.
- not saliva dependent: nano-hydroxyapatite doesn’t rely on the minerals in your saliva to work. It already contains calcium and phosphate, adding more of these beneficial elements into your saliva on its own. It’s effective regardless of your saliva quality and quantity!
- biocompatibility: since your teeth are already made up of hydroxyapatite, they recognize and absorb the nano-sized particles. This allows those particles to remineralize your teeth by integrating into your tooth structure. Nano-particles work from the inside out, rather than just coating the tooth surface like fluoride.
- no known risk of overexposure: unlike fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite does not pose a risk of toxicity or overexposure (since it is recognized by the body). This makes it safe for all ages; it’s even considered a safe alternative to fluoride for children, people at risk of fluoride overexposure, and pregnant women.
With its natural compatibility, deep remineralizing power, and trusted safety, we believe that nano-hydroxyapatite is more than just an effective alternative to fluoride; it’s an upgrade!
4: nano-hydroxyapatite doesn’t just soothe sensitive teeth, it repairs enamel
Sensitivity is often caused when the hard protective outer layer of your teeth (the enamel) wears down over time. This exposes “dentin tubules” (tiny passageways) that lead to your tooth’s center nerve. Then, when you eat or drink something hot, cold, sugary, or acidic, it can trigger that ultra-sensitive center nerve.
The good news? High-quality nano-hydroxyapatite can “plug” these passageways and repair your enamel to relieve sensitivity, strengthen your teeth, and even whiten your smile. Our Hydroxi™ formula uses only the highest quality nano-hydroxyapatite, giving it the ability to successfully plug those exposed tubules. Enamel remineralization by nano-hydroxyapatite isn't just surface-level repair or “numbing”! It’s a root-cause solution.
Other big-name tooth sensitivity products take a band-aid approach, numbing or coating your enamel to provide temporary relief. Some dental products use chemicals like potassium nitrate, a numbing agent that “works” by coating your teeth and blocking the pain receptors between your brain and your tooth’s nerve.
Not only is this approach temporary and ineffective, it also goes against our love for the mind-body-mouth connection. As a holistic oral care company with a motto to nurture a healthy mouth + healthy you, we don’t believe in shutting off the connection between your body’s systems. Instead, we aim to honor and nurture your whole body, providing solutions like Hydroxi™ that are health-conscious, holistic, safe, and truly effective.
5: not all nano-hydroxyapatite products are created equal
We’re excited that nano-hydroxyapatite has gained so much popularity in the dental care world, but this popularity can cause a frenzy. Some brands may rush to “hop on the bandwagon”, leading to products that may be ineffective, low-quality, and sometimes even dangerous.
When looking for nano-hydroxyapatite products to add to your daily routine, it’s important to understand the differences and make informed decisions. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
- particle size: when it comes to hydroxyapatite toothpaste, you’ll want to make sure the particles are “nano” sized, not “micro” sized (as depicted in the photo above!). Only nano-sized particles (around 50 nm) are small enough to fill the microscopic damage in your tooth enamel. These nano-sized particles penetrate and bind to your enamel to remineralize it, protecting it from wear and tear and relieving sensitivity in the process. Larger particles simply can't penetrate enamel in the same way.
- particle shape / SCCS approval: we touched on this above, but you’ll want to ensure the specific nano-hydroxyapatite particles are rod-shaped and approved by the SCCS. Other shapes, such as needle, circle, or “irregular” are not considered safe and effective. Some companies out there may opt for needle-shaped particles as a way to save money, but these particles are banned in the EU for concerns regarding cell damage and toxicity!
- nano-hydroxyapatite performance, not percentage: some companies might emphasize a certain percentage of nano-hydroxyapatite in their oral care products, claiming that high percentages correlate with better performance. This is simply not true, especially when those companies don’t have lab test results or any compelling data to back up their performance claims. Any product that focuses on the percentage of nHAp without proof of performance should be reconsidered.
At Davids, we focus on scientific evidence from the SCCS and lab results from a trusted third-party lab to confirm the safety and impressive performance of our Hydroxi™ formula. This way, we can help you avoid the confusion that comes with sifting through all the nHAp products on the market. You can smile wide knowing that Hydroxi™ is one of the safest, most effective formulas you can choose.
discover Davids Hydroxi™, the new gold standard in oral care
To recap, we touched on a few reasons to love our Hydroxi™ formula, including the fact that it contains the only nano-hydroxyapatite approved by the SCCS. But if that were the only special thing about Hydroxi™, it wouldn’t be enough to set us apart from the competition.
So, what makes Hydroxi™ unique? The true secret lies in how we blend SCCS-approved nano-hydroxyapatite with carefully selected, high quality, naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients.
Each component in Hydroxi™ is of the highest quality and purity....and serves a unique and important purpose.
