Here are a few common ones. hydrogen peroxide This manufactured chemical was first discovered for teeth whitening back in the 1800s. Since then, it’s become famous for its whitening capabilities when used in whitening strips, gels, pens, toothpaste, mouthwash, and more. What is hydrogen peroxide, anyway? It’s a bleaching and oxidizing agent, meaning it loses electrons through a process called oxidation. Why does this matter? Well, it means that hydrogen peroxide is prone to reacting with other molecules to generate free radicals, which are harmful, unstable molecules that can damage your cells and lead to chronic issues. We put these words in quotes because they really just increase the temperature of the chemicals to break them down faster and speed up the chemical reactions. As mentioned above, these chemical reactions often involve harmful molecules called free radicals. While it may speed up the whitening process, it also adds fuel to the fire caused by free radicals. This means that they can cause even more stress to your oral microbiome and worsen the side effects that come with using these chemical whitening agents (more on that in the next section). purple toothpaste This silly social media trend involves using purple (artificially dyed) toothpaste to temporarily coat your teeth and give off the illusion of a brighter, whiter smile. This is because yellow and purple are opposite each other on the color wheel. Once you apply a coat of purple toothpaste, it tends to “cancel out” the yellow tones on your tooth’s surface. But once this synthetic substance rinses off your tooth’s surface (through eating, drinking, or saliva alone), your teeth will go back to their original yellow tone. In other words, purple toothpaste is great for instant gratification…and not much else. This is the most common type of oral lichen planus and typically does not turn into a more serious condition (like oral cancer). Erosive OLP appears as red open sores that often hurt and burn. This type of oral lichen planus is more likely to lead to mouth cancer, so it’s best to get it checked regularly. Both of these types of oral lichen planus come with common symptoms, such as: Small pale bumps that form a “lacy” pattern on your inner cheeks, tongue, or gums Red open sores inside your mouth Dry mouth Burning, bleeding, inflammation, and irritation with brushing Sore gums Metallic taste Decreased ability to taste Roughness inside the mouth General pain and burning throughout the day All of these symptoms can make it difficult to keep up with your daily habits, whether it’s eating, talking, or keeping up with your oral care routine. oral lichen planus vs thrush It can be difficult to distinguish between oral lichen planus and other oral conditions such as thrush and “geographic tongue” because they can all cause white patches or lines in the mouth. Oral thrush is a yeast (fungal) infection in the mouth that appears as “creamy” white patches in the mouth and cracks in the corner of your lips. It’s often accompanied by dry mouth and burning. Unlike lichen planus, oral thrush can be treated with antifungal rinses. Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition (as described above) that appears as “lacy” white patches, streaks, or tiny white dots. Geographic tongue looks like red patches on the tongue with white “wavy” lines next to the red patches. We understand it can be hard to spot the differences among these conditions. Now that we’ve covered the symptoms of oral lichen planus, let’s explore some of the causes. what causes lichen planus? While experts don’t know the exact cause of lichen planus, they believe it’s caused by: immune system dysfunction: also known as an autoimmune response, this occurs when your immune system attacks healthy skin (and mucosal tissue) genetics: does lichen planus run in your family? Certain genetic variations (called HLA alleles) are associated with lichen planus and can be passed down. stressful triggers: in addition to general stress, allergies and infections can also trigger lichen planus. medications: medications for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and malaria have all been linked to lichen planus. hepatitis C: this virus has also been known to trigger lichen planus. It’s important to note that some people experience allergic reactions to dental materials like metal fillings, which can cause similar symptoms to lichen planus. 10 years of Davids: celebrating a decade of excellence, innovation, and community
It’s hard to believe, but Davids is officially 10 years old! The 10-year mark is a massive milestone, and one that very few small businesses reach. History shows that nearly 18% of small businesses fail within their first year, 50% fail around the five-year mark, and roughly 65% fail by year 10. This decade represents more than just passing time. It reflects dedication, growth, and the incredible support from customers like you. What began as a single batch of toothpaste (hand-filled in a 1,800 square foot facility) has grown into a nationwide favorite… now available in over 11,000 retail locations across the USA. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our gratitude, but we want to give you a heartfelt THANK YOU for being such a special, integral part of our journey. To celebrate, let’s look back at how it all started, explore how we (yes, that includes you too!) got to where we are today, and look forward to what’s to come in the next 10 years. a trip down memory lane The idea for Davids came to Eric in 2011, when he first started searching for better, cleaner alternatives to conventional toothpaste. Disappointed by his findings, he came up with the “simple” idea to create his own toothpaste company. Of course, it was anything but simple. It turned into a four-year obsession for Eric to develop the cleanest ingredient, highest performance, and most sustainable toothpaste available. In 2015, Eric and his wife mixed, filled, packaged, and sold their first tubes from a 1,800 square foot facility… and Davids Natural Toothpaste officially launched. They debuted Davids at a Sustainability Fair at the LA Convention Center, where they quickly sparked curiosity, won over early fans, and felt the momentum begin. Back in those days, it took about two hours for Eric to mix 200 tubes of Davids… and even more time to fill and package each tube. He eventually hired his mother-in-law as his first employee to help out. At one point, they powered through a 104-day stretch of mixing, filling, and packaging by hand. Our cofounder (and Eric’s wife), Annette, would get home after teaching high school and get straight to helping Eric print labels, box products, and drive across town to drop off all orders by 5pm. This was the norm every single day for the first 3–4 years of the company. major Davids milestones 2015 Davids officially launches! We sell our first tubes out of our 1,800 square foot facility. Plus, we’ve been Leaping Bunny Certified since day one! 2016 We hired our first employee: Eric’s mother-in-law, Linda. We filled 250,000 tubes by hand, went to our first trade show (Expo West), and became EWG Verified. 2017 Davids goes international! We partnered with our first international distributor in Japan. 2018 We scaled to nationwide distribution and moved into a larger production facility (4,000 square feet). 2019 After hand filling hundreds of thousands of tubes, Davids upgraded to an automated filling machine! We also launched charcoal+peppermint. 2020 We launched herbal citrus mint and spearmint, and expanded into a second production building. 2021 Amazon sales grew exponentially, and we continued to grow across retail channels. 2022 We launched our first nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste and our stainless steel tongue scraper. 2023 Our strawberry watermelon toothpaste launched, along with bamboo toothbrushes and expanding dental floss infused with nano hydroxyapatite.
