What do you mean by "natural" toothpaste?
Our Definition of Natural
The term "natural" remains an undefined term in the United States for personal care and cosmetic products including toothpaste. At Davis, we believe in holding ourselves to a higher standard, and we are committed to having clear, consistent, and transparent messaging.
So, until it is regulated, we have created our own definition of "natural toothpaste" that we adhere to.
What "natural toothpaste" means to Davids:
> Ingredients that are sourced and derived from nature, such as plants, minerals, and other naturally occurring materials.
> While all of our ingredients are naturally sourced or derived from natural materials, some ingredients undergo refinement or processing to meet our strict standards for safety, purity, and performance. For example, calcium carbonate is mined from limestone and must be carefully ground, filtered, and purified to reach food-grade quality. These processes do not alter the natural origin or fundamental composition of the ingredient, but they help ensure the ingredient is safe and effective for daily use.
> Free from artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, or preservatives..
> EWG VERIFIED™ formulas to ensure rigorous health and safety standards.
> Free from animal-derived ingredients (Vegan) and never tested on animals (cruelty-free).
> Free from fluoride, SLS, and petroleum-derived ingredients. Always non-toxic and safe for daily use.
> Use of recyclable, responsibly sourced, FSC certified paperboard packaging, and recyclable metal tubes to reduce plastic waste and support sustainability.

What % of hydroxyapatite do you use for your toothpaste products that include this ingredient?
The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), the primary EU regulatory board for cosmetic safety, recommends having less than 10% hydroxyapatite for safety purposes, which is inline with Davids Hydroxi™ formulation.
It is important to note that a higher percentage does not mean better performance as not all hydroxyapatite material is the same or performs the same. Many competing hydroxyapatite toothpaste products use calcium carbonate coated with hydroxyapatite, or micro hydroxyapatite which does not remineralize the teeth or reduce sensitivity nearly as effectively as the nano material found in Davids Hydroxi, even when used at a much higher percentage.
Davids Hydrox™ toothpaste is formulated for maximum performance, not maximum percentage. Look at the lab results above to see how Davids Hydroxi™ nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste compares to competing hydroxyapatite toothpaste products.

Does Davids toothpaste prevent/reduce cavities?
The FDA does not allow any natural toothpaste without fluoride to make claims related to preventing or reducing cavities. That being said, cavities are caused by the bacteria in plaque that eat through your enamel and create a cavity. With regular brushing Davids works to reduce plaque and effectively maintain oral health.
Does Davids toothpaste work for sensitive teeth?
Davids Hydroxi™ Sensitive+Whitening Nano Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a breakthrough in sensitive relief oral care products which actively works to repair the tooth and block teeth nerves.
Nano hydroxyapatite was first developed by NASA to help repair and strengthen the teeth of astronauts returning from zero-gravity environments, and we are proud to make this same modern science available in our Davids Hydroxi™ line of products.
This high-performance, fluoride free formulation takes a revolutionary approach to relieving sensitive teeth. With its unique ability to bind to enamel and smooth out micro-imperfections, nano hydroxyapatite actively works to repair the enamel and block the nerve passageways to relieve tooth sensitivity.
Whereas, conventional sensitive toothpastes typically uses drugs (potassium nitrate) to temporarily numb the teeth nerves, Davids Hydroxi™ w/ Nano Hydroxyapatite actually bonds to the tooth surface to repair the tooth for relieving the pain.

Why have I not received a tube key with my order?
Our customers have spoken, and we’ve listened. One of the top complaints we receive has been related to the excess number of tube keys customers acquire as they continue to repurchase Davids toothpaste.
Many customers have a 20+ collection of tube keys and complain about the amount of waste and excess.
Including the tube key also creates some packaging difficulties, and slows down production.
For these reasons we made the difficult choice to stop including our tube key in the carton with each tube of toothpaste. This change has allowed us to stay true to our mission of reducing waste, and streamline our packaging and production processes to continue meeting demand (thank you for all the support).
However, the Davids tube key is not going away. We are making them available on our shop, and they will always be an important part of the Davids story.

Why do you use metal tubes?
Our metal tube is a great choice for a lot of reasons. First, is the reduction of plastic waste. About 1.5 Billion plastic toothpaste tubes end up in US landfills every single year, and we wanted to do better.
You may have thought we selected the metal tube for it's modern aesthetic (that was part of it), but the main reasons Davids comes in metal tubes is for maintaining maximum freshness. Our metal tubes maintain their shape and don't suck air into the tube after each squeeze. This reduces oxidation and the need for artificial preservatives.
One of the best reasons for using an aluminum tube is that it is fully, and endlessly recyclable. Meaning better choices fro you, and for the planet.
Please see additional FAQs below for details on how to recycle Davids tubes.
What are Davids tubes made out of?
Davids tubes are made out of endlessly recyclable aluminum and lined with a Food Grade Non-BPA liner so there is no paste to metal contact or worries about leaching. This barrier also helps seal in the freshness of the product.
What does a tube roller do?
A metal tube roller (tube key), that is designed to slide on the end of the tube to roll up the metal tube as the toothpaste is being used and to squeeze the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube at the end.
How do I recycle the metal tube?
A few things to note about recycling your Davids tube... you will need to clean the excess paste from the inside of the tube, so you will need to do a few things.
1. Take some scissors or shears and cut off both ends of the tube.
2. Cut a slit the full length of the tube to fold open the tube to access the inside of the tube for cleaning....the edges of metal are sharp, so please be careful.
3. Wash off the excess paste with running water....toothbrush can be helpful here for removing all the paste.
4. Discard metal in recycle bin. It will be up to your local waste management provider to properly sort/recycle as we do not currently take back used tubes for recycling.
PRO TIPS:
1. Roll up the clean metal so that sharp edges are no longer exposed and wad up into a 3" ball along with other aluminum foil you are recycling. This will greatly improve the chances of being sorted properly for recycling by the waste management company.
2. Alternatively, you can roll up the cleaned metal and place inside an aluminum can which also greatly increases the chances of being sorted for recycling.

Is the cap recyclable?
Our toothpaste cap is made from virgin-grade high density polyethylene (HDPE), Symbol#2 which is recyclable.
Is the tube roller (tube key) recyclable?
Yes, the tube roller (tube key) is made from mild steel which is a recyclable material. If you use other products that come in a metal tube (medical ointments, lotions, etc.) consider repurposing your tube key by using with other metal tubes you may be using. If you have no further use for the tube key, you can place in your recycling bin.
Do you offer incentives to return the tube keys?
Yes, As a way to ensure the tube keys are properly recycled, and to reward loyalty, we will send one free tube of Davids toothpaste after receiving back 20 tubes keys from your past purchases. Please include a note indicating which flavor you would like along with you email address and return mailing address and send to:

Does your toothpaste contain any heavy metals?
Please know that toothpaste is a regulated cosmetic product by the FDA, and allowable limits of lead are 10.0 parts per million. Davids toothpaste has been shown to contain 0.5 parts per million which is 20x (2,000%) lower than the allowable limits. Davids toothpaste is one of the few toothpaste products certified by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) with a 1 rating for ingredient safety, which is the best rating possible. As part of the EWG certification process, Davids was evaluated for lead and other heavy metals. The reality is that lead naturally occurs in many fruit, vegetable, and other food products, so the presence of lead is normal, and is only an issue when found in unsafe amounts. Because Davids toothpaste uses naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients it is expected that micro trace amounts of lead found in nature are found in some ingredients. Because Davids is 2,000% below the allowable limit for what is considered safe, we have full confidence in the safety of our products.
