what do we mean by "natural"?
The FDA has not defined the term “natural” and has not established a regulatory definition for this term in cosmetic labeling, so we have established these guidelines in our efforts to remain transparent in our definition and stay true to our mission and our goals.
Davids definition of "natural":
- ingredients sourced & derived from nature
- free from animal derived ingredients
- not tested on animals (cruelty free)
- use of sustainable packaging
The larger toothpaste brands commonly contain ingredients that many health-conscious consumers are actively looking to avoid such as sodium lauryl sulfate, bleaching agents, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, and artificial colors. These ingredients are chosen to maximize profit, not performance.
every ingredient in Davids is designed to effectively remove plaque, whiten teeth, freshen breath, & support your oral health.
fluoride free
We have chosen to not include fluoride in our formulation for a variety of reasons. One of these is that every toothpaste manufacturer that includes fluoride is required to print the following warning label on their packaging:
"Keep out of reach of Children under 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away."
You wont find this warning label on Davids toothpaste, since our toothpaste is fluoride-free.
no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives
We eliminated the artificial ingredients that are found in most other toothpastes and found safe alternates. The result is a toothpaste that is sweet (but not too sweet), naturally flavored, and naturally preserved.
sulfate free (no sls)
Sulfate based chemicals, most commonly Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), is a chemical commonly found in toothpaste used to produce the foaming. Unfortunately, sulfates are harsh to the environment and your body. Many people experience mouth sores from using toothpaste with sulfates, because of the harshness of this chemical. We have substituted SLS with a more natural ingredient derived from coconut oil (Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate), which is sulfate-free. Davids produces a milder foaming action, and does not burn your mouth like SLS.
cruelty free
Davids does not do animal testing in the development of our products. We believe all life should be valued and respected. Davids Toothpaste is a member of Leaping Bunny, which is a coalition of companies dedicated to the promotion of humane animal treatment.
Vegan
Davids products are all plant & Earth based with no animal byproducts or animal based ingredients.
made in the USA
not JUST made in the USA... USA origin too (big difference). While talking to suppliers, we discovered that many of the big toothpaste companies buy ingredients that come from overseas (mostly China, Malaysia & India), and mix them in their US factory and stamp "Made in USA" on their package. At Davids, we take a much different approach... we do our best to use only premium ingredients that are farmed, mined, and processed in the USA.... over 90% of our ingredients are USA Origin, supporting the sustainability of the USA economy and American jobs. When you use the highest grade premium USA ingredients, the difference is noticeable!
NOTICE: Toothpaste is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and nd is expected to meet established safety standards for impurities including trace heavy metals.
Davids is proud to be one of the few toothpaste brands that is EWG Verified® by the Environmental Working Group and holds a 1 rating for ingredient safety, which is their highest rating. As part of the EWG Verified® certification process, our products are evaluated for lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals against strict safety criteria.
Trace amounts of elements such as lead and arsenic occur naturally in the environment and can be present at very low levels in plant based ingredients despite purification processes. Davids toothpaste has shown less than 0.5 parts per million of lead and 0.2 parts per million of arsenic. These levels are far below all applicable safety reference guidelines commonly cited by regulators in the United States and internationally, and well below thresholds used in major safety reviews.
Toothpaste is intended to be used for brushing and then spat out, which also significantly limits systemic exposure. Based on normal use and the extremely low trace levels detected, we remain fully confident in the safety and quality of our products.
