tooth be told: five surprising culprits and solutions every parent should know

When it comes to your child’s smile, there’s so much to think about to protect their oral health during these critical years…even beyond brushing and flossing. From sneaky sugars hiding in healthy snacks to surprising habits that can weaken enamel, tooth troubles can sometimes start with habits and things you least expect. Luckily, understanding these common (yet surprising) culprits can help you take proactive steps to protect your kids oral health. Let’s explore five sneaky culprits and how you can avoid them…with the help of our kids toothpaste, of course! 1: sneaky sugars and acids in healthy snacks While avoiding sugary drinks and candy might seem obvious, sometimes it’s the healthy, whole-food snacks that can sneakily impact your child’s teeth. Sugary, sticky snacks like dried fruit, fruit snacks, granola bars, flavored yogurts, and more often contain lots of sugar that can bind to their enamel. Not only do these sticky, gooey foods stick to their teeth….they also trap bacteria. This gives bacteria a prime place to thrive and weaken your little one’s enamel. To promote oral care for kids, we recommend they rinse their mouths (at the very least) or brush their teeth with kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste after consuming these sticky, sugary snacks. We also encourage you to examine nutrition labels, check out the sugar content, and swap for better options like real fibrous fruit (crunchy fruits often have a “scrubby” effect), nuts, and cheese. 2: skipping water after meals We place so much emphasis on flossing and brushing with kids toothpaste, but the truth is that the “in-between” time is just as important when it comes to oral care for kids. Drinking water, especially during and after meals, can help to flush bad bacteria, food, debris, and acids from your little one’s teeth. Adequate water intake also works to prevent dry mouth, a condition that allows bacteria to flourish more than usual. Did you know that more than half of all children and adolescents in America are not hydrated enough? Without drinking enough water, food particles, acids, and sugar can linger on your kid’s teeth, which can increase the risk of plaque buildup and enamel damage. To avoid this, we recommend leading by example and staying on top of your own hydration! You can also incentivize your little ones to maintain healthy hydration habits by giving them a fun reusable water bottle. Make water their go-to drink throughout the day and save sodas, juices, and sweetened milks for special occasions. 3: pacifiers, sippy cups, and thumb sucking Research shows that prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, and drinking from sippy cups can lead to many kids oral health complications down the road. These complications can include poor jaw development, crooked teeth, a bad/misaligned bite, a narrow palate, and more. How old is too old for thumb-sucking? This study found that the most significant problems occur when children continue to suck their thumb or pacifier beyond four years old. Most little ones will naturally grow out of thumb-sucking between ages two and four. But if they show no signs of stopping around three years old, dental professionals recommend stepping in to stop the habit. Whether it’s a thumb, pacifier, or sippy cup, when the time comes to “step in”, we have a few recommendations to help them wean. You can try keeping track of triggers, implementing a reward system (like introducing a new fun kids toothpaste flavor), using open “big kid” cups, replacing the habit with a toy they can squeeze or fidget with, or in difficult cases…resorting to gloves. You can also try enlisting help from a dental professional to reason with them (we know reasoning with a little one is easier said than done). Whatever approach you choose, don’t give up! When it comes to oral care for kids, these early years and habits are critical to their long-term oral and overall health. 4: warm milk at bedtime Warm milk before bed is a soothing tradition that dates back thousands of years! While milk has many mental and physical benefits for growing kids that extend far beyond sleep, it also has pretty substantial sugar content. Giving them milk before bed (especially after they’ve brushed their teeth) or giving them a bottle of milk to take to bed allows sugar to linger on their teeth all night long. These sugars feed bad bacteria, which can lead to plaque buildup and enamel erosion. To avoid this, try giving them water before bed (and solidifying this habit early) and brushing their teeth with kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste to help remineralize their enamel. All of our kids toothpaste formulas are made with intentional ingredients that fight bacteria, scrub their teeth, and nurture their oral and overall health. Our kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste contains added nano-hydroxyapatite particles to replenish essential minerals in their enamel, from the inside out. 5: brushing too hard (or with the wrong toothpaste) It’s easy for little ones to think that aggressive brushing will clean their teeth better, but it can actually lead to enamel and gum damage. On the same note, using kids toothpaste that’s too abrasive or full of chemicals can harm their vulnerable mouths too. To avoid this, try explaining to your kid(s) that aggressive brushing is harmful….just like if they brush their hair too aggressively! Instead, encourage them to focus on small, gentle, circular motions on every individual tooth. We also recommend getting them a safe and effective kids toothpaste from our lineup. Our kids toothpaste options are formulated with gentle, effective ingredients that fall well within the ADA’s safe recommendations for Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA). On top of that, our toothpastes are made with ingredients that are sourced and derived from nature. Our formulas do not contain fluoride, sulfates, animal-derived ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. With options like our mild mint toothpaste, orange vanilla kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste, and strawberry watermelon toothpaste…you can find a fun flavor that you and your little one(s) can enjoy for years to come. buy now.

does your kid hate oral care? try our top five tips and premium toothpaste for kids

Do your kids put up a fight when you ask them to brush (let alone floss) their teeth? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. A survey by Delta Dental revealed that 45% of parents agree it’s a huge challenge to get their kids to brush their teeth. Day after day, fuss after fuss, we understand it’s tempting to throw the towel in altogether. Why go through all the stress of forcing your kids oral health upon them when their teeth are just going to fall out anyway? Well, we’re here to remind you that these early years are some of the most important and foundational years for oral health, and establishing good habits at a young age can work wonders for your kids down the road. After all, healthy “baby” teeth play a central role in helping your child learn how to chew and talk, and they pave the way for your kid’s permanent teeth. In other words, healthy baby teeth give your little ones a much better chance at growing healthy adult teeth! So, for those parents/caretakers who feel like they’re entering a battle every time tooth-brushing rolls around, we’re sharing our top five tips to help you establish a fun and effective kids oral health routine. Of course, we couldn’t share these tips without also reminding you to schedule a trip to the dentist for your little one (every six months) and encouraging you to refresh their routine with our favorite toothpaste for kids. Now, onto our favorite tips! 1: teach them fun facts about their teeth Start to bring some fun back into oral care by telling your little one 10 surprising facts about their teeth. In this previous article, you can explore 10 of our favorite facts, including how enamel is stronger than bone and how teeth can serve as a second set of fingerprints. It’s worth noting: research reveals that oral health education programs in schools have been effective at increasing kids’ knowledge, attitudes, and dental hygiene. Adding a little bit of fun into oral health education can help get them more excited about kids oral health! You might learn a thing or two that’ll motivate and rejuvenate your own oral health routine. Additionally, you can create fictional stories that depict the importance of kids oral health. For example, if your little one really loves superheroes, maybe create a story where oral bacteria and plaque are supervillains, and the toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss are a team of superheroes who work together to keep their “tooth town” safe and healthy. 2: do fun hands-on experiments Learning fun facts is a great entry point, but it’s no secret that some kids learn and absorb things better by seeing and doing. There are so many visual and hands-on activities you can do with your little ones to get them excited about kids oral health. This article runs through 30 exercises, ranging from interactive videos to science experiments. One experiment involves covering hard-boiled eggs with flour-based “plaque” and challenging your kid(s) to brush the plaque off the egg before and after it’s hardened. This can help them see the value of brushing their teeth daily to avoid allowing plaque to harden on their own teeth. Another activity involves creating a replica mouth full of marshmallow “teeth,” giving you a perfect diorama to show your little ones how to floss properly. 3: establish a rewards system A simple, harmless rewards system might also help solidify your kids oral health routine. While parents often have mixed feelings about external rewards, this 2023 study shows that they can promote children to be more proactive. If this is something you’re interested in, here are some simple reward ideas. sticker charts or other crafts, puzzles, and art an extra trip to the park an exciting playdate a new toothbrush that lights up a new toothpaste flavor (more on that below) a new game to play before, during, or after the routine We recommend reserving rewards for more “dire” situations, so your little one doesn’t expect a reward after brushing twice every single day (unless you’re up for that). 4: turn brushing into a dance party Can you make brushing time a family affair? Since we all have to brush our teeth at some point in the morning and evening, it can be the perfect opportunity to bond as a family. After all, kids love following their parents and older siblings! We recommend throwing on your (shared) favorite song to dance and brush together. You can also find educational songs out there specifically crafted around kids oral health. These two-minute songs can keep your little one engaged the entire time, guiding them through the movements of brushing and flossing, so they can practice proper techniques while jamming to some tunes. You can start by searching “brush your teeth songs” to sift through options before committing to one (which we encourage since you’ll probably end up listening to it every day for the foreseeable future). 5: try different toothpaste flavors and toothbrush types It’s possible that your child’s resistance to brushing might be related to sensory issues. It could be as simple as they don’t like the taste/texture of their toothpaste or the feel of their toothbrush. If you haven’t already, try our strawberry+watermelon toothpaste! It’s the perfect option for both kids and adults because, unlike other conventional kids toothpaste, it doesn’t contain any chemical fillers, artificial flavors, or preservatives. Because it’s SLS-free, it won’t excessively foam like other toothpastes out there, and its juicy, subtly sweet flavor is perfect for your little ones. We think it’s the best toothpaste for kids because it’s fluoride-free and SLS-free, so you don’t have to worry about them swallowing it. Conventional formulas that are full of fluoride, SLS, and other potentially toxic ingredients come with a poison control label, but ours doesn’t need one. You can feel peace knowing your little one can swallow our toothpaste without worry. If your little one is open to mint flavors, we highly recommend introducing our sensitive+whitening nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste into their daily oral care routine. Starting them on a hydroxyapatite toothpaste routine when they’re young can help them develop strong, healthy enamel that’s properly nourished with essential minerals. This habit can help turn kids oral health into long-term oral health, setting them up for a bright, smiley future. buy now.

best toothpaste for kids 10 little-known facts about your teeth to get your kids excited about oral care

10 little-known facts about your teeth to get your kids excited about oral care

We know it can be hard to get your little one excited about oral health. With foundations that include avoiding sugary foods and brushing twice daily, it’s easy for kids to think oral care is the exact opposite of fun. But we want to bring the fun back to kids oral care by sharing 10 surprising facts about teeth. We hope these fun facts impress your little ones and help them feel more inspired to care for their teeth every single day. One of the easiest ways to do that is to brush daily with Davids strawberry watermelon toothpaste, the best premium toothpaste for kids! 1: you gain 12 teeth after your baby teeth fall out The first set of “baby teeth” only has 20 teeth! Once they fall out and you grow your second set of adult teeth, you have 32. With more molars and premolars, you’re able to chew harder, tougher food to make sure it’s easily digestible. Each tooth in your set of 32 has its own function, so it’s important to treat them all with love during your daily oral care routine. 2: your enamel is stronger than bone With a Mohs Hardness Scale ranking of 5, your enamel (the outer, protective layer of your tooth) is the hardest substance in your body. But that certainly doesn’t mean your enamel is invincible. Although it’s hard, it’s also paper-thin, and it comes into contact with so many damaging acids, hard snacks, and more. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your kids oral care routine nourishes and strengthens your enamel every single day! (More on that next.) 3: teeth are the only part of your body that can’t self-repair They can’t self-repair, so you better take care! We just discussed that enamel is the strongest substance in your body, but it contains no living cells. This means that once your enamel is truly damaged, it can’t rebuild itself. This is why it’s so important to strengthen and protect your enamel while it’s still healthy. How can you do that? Brush daily with Davids, the best toothpaste for kids. You can also throw hydroxyapatite toothpaste or natural mouthwash (fortified with hydroxyapatite) into your kids oral care routine to help them remineralize and strengthen their enamel at the molecular level. 4: on average, you’ll spend 38 days of your life brushing your teeth When you add it all up, you don’t even spend two months of your whole life brushing your teeth! We hope this serves as a little inspiration for your little ones to keep on going with their daily kids oral care routine. 5: your teeth have “roots” Did you know that only two-thirds of your tooth exists above the gumline? The part below your gums is called the “root” of your tooth. The root contains lots of blood vessels and super-sensitive nerves, which can lead to a lot of discomfort if not properly protected. The outer layers of your teeth (the enamel and dentin) protect the roots, so your nerves aren’t exposed to daily threats like sugars and acids. To keep your enamel and dentin healthy, you have to clean and nourish them every single day. So you can tell your little one there is rhyme and reason behind the kids oral health advice you always preach. 6: your teeth are basically another set of fingerprints No two people have the same set of teeth, just like no two people have the same fingerprint. Your teeth are beautifully unique, and we hope that makes you feel even more inspired to take care of them all throughout the day. 7: your teeth started growing before you were born Although your first baby teeth don’t erupt until 6-12 months, those teeth actually begin to form when the baby is still in the womb (as early as the 6-week mark)! Isn’t it cool to know your amazing teeth have been growing and developing since before you were born? All the more reason to treat them with special care. 8: before toothpaste, people used ground oyster shells The toothpaste we know and love hasn’t been around that long....compared to how long humans have roamed this planet. Before toothpaste, humans would create their own toothpaste mixtures from nature (hey, sound familiar?). However, their formulas weren’t quite as delicious and gentle as our premium toothpaste. They would use things like crushed oyster shells, charcoal, salt, animal hooves, eggshells, pumice stones, and more. Knowing that is enough to make us feel grateful for the amazing toothpaste we get to use today. 9: your teeth can tell a story When the Tooth Fairy picks up a tooth, it can uncover a lot about your little one’s habits. From the yellow plaque buildup on the surface to the scratches, holes, and imperfections in your enamel, teeth can tell a story about brushing habits, your diet, and your tendency to grind/clench.A yellow hue might tell a story of poor oral hygiene. A scratch on the surface might indicate frequent eating of hard foods (like pretzels!) or teeth grinding. Dark spots might reveal decay from excess sugar consumption. The good news? Your kids oral care routine has the power to write the story! Make sure it’s a good story by using the best toothpaste for kids. 10: dogs have over 10 more teeth than humans You now know that you have 32 teeth as an adult, but did you know that most dogs have 42 teeth? They have more premolars as well as sharper canine teeth, so they can chew through harder substances. And yes, even dogs have to keep on top of their oral health! why Davids is the best premium toothpaste for kids Our strawberry watermelon toothpaste is the best toothpaste for kids....because it’s not only delicious, but it's also effective at breaking down plaque, freshening breath, and leaving you (and your little one) with a supreme clean. And it does so without the use of chemicals or artificial ingredients! Each of our ingredients is derived from nature, and we never include questionable ingredients such as fluoride or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).If your little one doesn't mind the taste of mint, we highly recommend adding our sensitive+whitening nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste to their kids oral care routine. As the best kids toothpaste without fluoride, it contains enamel-strengthening hydroxyapatite, the natural, non-toxic, and arguably more effective alternative to fluoride. buy now.

You’ve heard the saying “monkey see, monkey do,” so let’s put that in the context of oral health! To brush up on the basics, here’s an overview of some of our favorite oral care habits. Floss (at least) once daily. If once, do it at night. Brush (at least) twice daily for 2 minutes with Davids toothpaste + bamboo toothbrush. Tongue scrape (at least) once daily with the Davids tongue scraper. If once, do it at night. Swish with a natural mouthwash or herbal oil pull weekly. To keep your mouth fresh after meals, use a natural superfood breath spray. Visit your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleanings every 6 months! Practicing these habits daily will show your kids that you’re committed to oral care, so they might feel inspired to do the same. 2: make it fun We know, this one is easier said than done.We encourage you to dream up new ways to make your kids oral care routine fun for the whole family. Can you pick a new 2-minute song each week to time the brushing? Can you buy fun colors of floss? Can you make it a family bonding activity by gathering in the bathroom? Can you think of a new game to play before, during, or after the brushing? Can you choose a delicious toothpaste flavor, like Davids strawberry + watermelon?Childrens oral health doesn’t have to be a chore. If you approach it like a fun event that brings you a lot of gratitude and joy, your little one is more likely to embrace that energy and feel more excited about it. 3: choose mouth (and gut) healthy foods Nutrition (in the context of oral health) is one of our favorite things to talk about! We have so many resources outlining mouth-and-gut-healthy foods, here are a few of them. the importance of nutrition for dental health our top five tips for nurturing your mouth-gut connection as a vegan the best and worst foods for dry mouth and how Davids can help In general, we recommend a diet that’s rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and diary. Ensure that these whole foods are providing enough fiber, protein, and calcium to support healthy bones and teeth for yourself and your little one. Last but not least, always remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! This is an essential step in preventing dry mouth and allowing your body to function effectively throughout the day. 4: emphasize that oral care enhances overall health It’s no secret that kids love to ask “why.” Does this conversation sound familiar? kid: why do I have to brush my teeth every day? you: because it’s good for you. kid: but why? Before you know it, you’re stuck in a circle of “whys.” To really emphasize the importance of oral care, we recommend putting it into the perspective of overall health. Oral health plays a pivotal role in gut health, which also plays a pivotal role in mental health, heart health, and beyond. Now, this can be hard to explain to your little one, so we recommend creating a relatable comparison (based on their unique interests) to explain the importance of kids oral care. We’ve listed a few examples below. Each planet in our solar system plays a role in maintaining balance, just like oral care plays a crucial role in maintaining balance in your health. Even tiny pollinators (like bees!) play a huge role in keeping our plants and ecosystems healthy. Tiny, everyday oral care habits play a massive role in keeping our bodies healthy. Just like bees, tiny (even microscopic) plankton species in the ocean are the base of the food chain, keeping ecosystems in balance and converting carbon dioxide into the oxygen we can breathe. They might be small (just like oral care habits may seem), but they’re mighty. Think about your little one’s favorite topics, and come up with one that you can relate back to demonstrate the importance of childrens oral health! 5: stock up on the best premium toothpaste for kids Our kids + adults premium toothpaste is the best toothpaste for kids because… it comes in a natural, mouthwatering strawberry watermelon flavor it uses 98% usa-origin ingredients it works hard to naturally whiten and clean your (and your little one’s) teeth it avoids controversial conventional ingredients such as fluoride and sls We’re proud to provide you with kids toothpaste without fluoride. best natural toothpaste for kids five questions to ask your kids’ dentist: build healthy habits at a young age

five questions to ask your kids’ dentist: build healthy habits at a young age

We know, it can feel overwhelming to be responsible for someone else’s oral health. Especially when that someone is your little one! With so many mixed messages out there about children's oral health, how do you figure out what’s best for your child’s teeth? Our advice: go straight to the professionals. But when you do, make sure you’re prepared with a strong understanding of the basics. That way, you can make informed, empowered decisions on behalf of your little one. Don’t worry, that’s exactly what we’re here to help you with. Read on to discover some important details about kids oral care. After all, when you feel more confident and comfortable at the pediatric dentist, your child can learn to feel the same way, too. 1: what should we expect during our first few visits? We recommend reaching out to your local dentist’s office to discuss what to expect before you head in for your little one’s first appointment. But we’ve also outlined some general info on what to expect below. first visit: the first visit should happen 6 months after the first tooth has come in, or by 12 months at the latest. Depending on your child’s age, the dentist might examine the jaw, bite, gums, and teeth to assess development. They might even perform a gentle cleaning! second visit: this should happen 6 months after the first visit. Frequent visits not only allow you to catch developmental issues...they can also help your child build comfort at the dentist. Your dentist will likely give tips and product recommendations for your child here. As you continue the trend of visits every 6 months, your dentist may recommend X-rays depending on your child’s age and individual tooth development. 2: do baby teeth really matter? Absolutely! It’s tempting to think, “they don’t matter; they’re just going to fall out anyways.” But this way of thinking can really hinder your kids oral health in the long run. Healthy baby teeth lay a healthy foundation for long-term oral health. Not only do healthy baby teeth help your child with chewing and talking, but they give your child a better chance of growing strong and healthy permanent teeth later on. If your child’s teeth are compromised, the resulting bacteria and organisms can actually harm the permanent tooth that’s growing beneath it. Not to mention, if a baby tooth decays, it can fall out too early. This can lead to crooked or damaged adult teeth. 3: what’s the best way to establish habits that promote my kids oral health? Our first piece of advice is to lead by example. Model great oral care behavior by taking great care of your own oral and holistic health. Remember that plaque can begin to accumulate at any age, so you’ll want to clean your child’s teeth as they come in. Some dentists may recommend rubbing a dental wipe or wet cloth on your child’s teeth before bedtime. When they’re old enough to hold the toothbrush themselves, make oral care a fun family ritual that you do together. One of the best ways to build good habits is to make it fun! Be sure to check out our strawberry watermelon natural toothpaste for kids + adults. It’s the perfect fun flavor that you and your little one(s) can enjoy together. We also recommend explaining the importance of each oral care habit, so your child begins to understand why they’re doing these things every single day. On top of that, we encourage you to ask your pediatric dentist or hygienist to show your child how to brush their teeth! They’re experienced in teaching little ones how to get the hang of it, and simply asking can take this intimidating task off your plate. 4: how can I help my child if they experience tooth sensitivity? Tooth sensitivity is a very bio-individual problem. Be sure to ask your dentist for specific recommendations to combat this problem. In general, tooth sensitivity occurs when the tooth’s enamel (hard outer surface) is compromised. This leaves the “tubules” that lead to the tooth’s center nerve “exposed,” so the nerve is left vulnerable. nutrition: avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks that can wear down the enamel over time, and instead replace them with more nutrient-dense foods  healthy habits: damaged enamel is often associated with poor oral care habits. Ensure that your child is brushing properly every day to avoid enamel wear supplementation: to promote long-term enamel health, consider introducing hydroxyapatite into your kids oral care routine. Hydroxyapatite is a mineral that already exists in your teeth, and adding it back in can strengthen the enamel from the inside out. In the short term, visit your dentist for a treatment that can relieve sensitivity, and be sure to ask them about specific, bio-individual tips for reducing your child’s tooth sensitivity. Your dentist will also be able to determine if the enamel damage requires additional treatment (such as a deep cleaning or a filling). It’s also important to remember that sensitivity can also be a result of new tender adult teeth, sinus issues, or tooth grinding. 5: what oral care products should my child use? Be sure to ask your dentist if your child is ready for flossing. It’s usually recommended to begin flossing when your child’s teeth begin to touch...and they have the patience and dexterity to get the job done.  It’s also a good idea to ask your child’s dentist for a recommendation on the right toothbrush for your little one(s). The grip, softness, and size of your child’s toothbrush can make a big difference, especially when they’re getting used to brushing by themselves! In regards to toothpaste, many dentists will begin recommending fluoride products when your child reaches age 4. This is the age they begin to understand how to spit out toothpaste, which is important because fluoride can be harmful to your little one if they swallow too much of it. That being said, we encourage you to research the pros and cons of fluoride and make your own empowered decision on if/when to introduce it into your kids oral care routine. On our blog, we have several articles that discuss hydroxyapatite, a science-supported, natural alternative to fluoride. Check them out! what is hydroxyapatite (n-HA)? get to know your mouth's new hero ingredient answering your common questions about hydroxyapatite, our newest hero ingredient hydroxyapatite vs. fluoride: how does it compare to the oral care superstar? is hydroxyapatite toothpaste safe for your kids? the five famous benefits of nano-hydroxyapatite how does nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) work to relieve your sensitive teeth? best toothpaste for toddlers children's oral health FAQ + why Davids is the best toothpaste for toddlers and beyond

children's oral health FAQ + why Davids is the best toothpaste for toddlers and beyond

1: when should my child start brushing with toothpaste? Most dental professionals agree that children are ready to start brushing around the age of 2. It’s important to note that most of the concern regarding this timing centers around a child’s tendency to ingest toothpaste. Most dental professionals don’t recommend brushing before 2 (or after 2 without supervision) because many kids will swallow the toothpaste (after all, it tastes good), which is a problem if that toothpaste contains fluoride and other chemicals. (Note: all ADA-approved toothpastes contain fluoride.) With Davids Natural Toothpaste, you don’t have to worry about this at all. Our toothpaste contains ingredients sourced and derived from nature....and avoids ingredients of concern. Because of this, our toothpaste is safe in the hands of your child. They can actually swallow it with no harm, although we find you get more bang for your buck if they actually use it to brush their teeth. Our NEW strawberry watermelon toothpaste is the perfect toothpaste to get your child started on their oral care routine. Actually, it’s made for adults too, so it’s a great option for the whole family. 2: why is kids oral care so important if their teeth are going to fall out anyway? Healthy baby teeth are so important. Not only do they help them learn how to chew and talk, but they set the stage for your kiddos’ permanent teeth. Your child has a better chance of growing straight and healthy permanent teeth if their baby teeth remain in good health. Bacteria and other oral pathogens can actually transfer from the compromised baby tooth to the permanent tooth that’s developing underneath it. Plus, if a baby tooth decays, it can fall out early. This can cause the adult teeth to grow crooked or damaged. 3: what’s the leading cause of cavities in children? Cavities are a result of bacteria and plaque buildup. High levels of bacteria in your child’s mouth are caused by many different things, some of which include: A high-sugar diet Juice/sugary drinks throughout the night Poor oral hygiene Low saliva flow (dry mouth) Sharing utensils or drinking cups To prevent cavities, be sure to teach them proper oral care habits...such as not sharing food and drinks with others, not eating sugary snacks before bed or during the night, flossing, and brushing for 2 minutes twice a day with an effective toothpaste like Davids. Our natural toothpaste works to reduce plaque, fight bad bacteria, and neutralize your kiddo’s mouth. Our hydroxyapatite toothpaste also works to repair+strengthen the enamel, creating a tougher defense against cavity-causing bacteria. 4: which is more important for my kids oral health: brushing or diet? We hate to break it to you, but oral health depends on both good brushing habits and a mouth-friendly diet. You can’t out-brush a bad diet and vice versa. As Dr. Mark Burhenne of Ask the Dentist explains, a diet rich in whole foods such as ethically-raised animal meats, butter, seeds, and leafy greens is great for strong and healthy teeth. It’s important that your kiddos eat more foods like this....and fewer simple starches and sugars. 5: how can I help my child with sensitive teeth? First, understand the cause of tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity occurs when the tooth enamel (the hard outer layer) gets worn down or damaged by bacteria, acids, scratching from hard foods, and the like. Once the enamel is damaged, it can expose the “tubules” (little holes/pathways) that lead to the tooth’s center nerve. Hot and cold substances (or even just air) can cause sensitivity because these outside forces now have “access” to the tooth’s center nerve. The best way to combat tooth sensitivity is to repair the enamel, and you can accomplish this using hydroxyapatite toothpaste. In our third-party lab testing, we found that Davids Sensitive+Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste outperformed leading competitors by successfully plugging exposed tubules. On top of this, be sure that your child is flossing daily and brushing twice daily. Consistency is key when it comes to childrens oral health. 6: when should I start bringing my child to the dentist? It’s recommended that you bring your child to the dentist around the 1-year mark...or within 6 months of their first tooth. During this visit, the dentist should cover the management of certain oral habits such as thumb sucking and teething and assess the development of your child’s teeth, gums, and jawline. Your kids oral health will also reach various milestones, which we’ve outlined below.  age 4: by this age, it’s critical to correct any bad (lingering) oral habits such as thumb sucking. Your dentist can help you develop strategies to wean your child off these habits. age 7: this is when your child’s molars grow in. At this point, a dentist or orthodontist can evaluate your child’s bite and identify any potential problems, allowing you to create a plan to solve any issues. However, if your child has any sensitivity or complaints regarding their teeth between these milestones, consider bringing them in between these milestones. 7: should my child use fluoride toothpaste or natural toothpaste? While we can’t make this decision for you, we can say that too much fluoride can cause problems. When it comes to fluoride, there’s always the risk of fluorosis (especially when in the hands of little ones who tend to use more toothpaste than they need). Fluorosis can occur when the body gets too much fluoride in the first 8 years of life, which can cause permanent teeth to appear discolored once they grow in. It can also cause other adverse side effects. This is why fluoride toothpaste always has a poison control warning....and experts recommend watching your child as they brush, so you can be sure they’re not ingesting too much fluoride. With natural toothpaste, you don’t have to worry about any of these things. Our toothpaste does not contain fluoride, and it’s actually safe to ingest. If your child enjoys minty flavored toothpaste, we recommend our nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste, which is comparable to fluoride, as it works to repair and strengthen the enamel from the inside out. However, unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite is a natural substance that already exists in your (and your child’s) body. If your kiddo prefers fruity flavored toothpaste, try our NEW strawberry watermelon flavor! It’s safe and fun for the whole family. 8: how can hydroxyapatite toothpaste promote kids oral health?  There are so many ways that hydroxyapatite toothpaste can promote childrens oral health. There are several studies that prove hydroxyapatite is effective in reducing dental caries and tooth sensitivity, especially in children.  When hydroxyapatite is added into your kids oral care routine at a young age, its remineralizing powers can work to strengthen young teeth before any decay occurs. Hydroxyapatite already exists naturally in the human body. In fact, it makes up 90% of the tooth’s enamel. But over time, the body’s natural supply of hydroxyapatite can diminish, and the enamel can weaken. That’s why it’s so important to be sure to replenish the supply with daily brushing. When kids do this starting at a young age, they set themselves up for strong and healthy teeth that are equipped to withstand the tests of time....and all the bacteria that accumulate during that time. 9: what should my kids oral care routine include? First, we recommend reading our previous article, how to make your child’s brushing routine fun and effective. In that article, we outline a fun kids oral care routine that looks something like this. Grab a bamboo toothbrush and natural kids toothpaste. We recommend our NEW strawberry watermelon flavor for kids + adults. Add a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, but rest easy knowing your little one can safely swallow our natural toothpaste. Hold the bamboo toothbrush so that it’s more-or-less facing the gums. Gently move the toothbrush back and forth on each tooth using short+gentle strokes. Brush the tongue thoroughly to remove the film of bacteria. Teach them to floss. You should begin this once your child’s teeth begin to touch. In addition to these steps, it’s important to lead by example. Your kids are always watching you, so you’ll want to make sure you’re modeling healthy oral care habits too! 10: why is Davids the best toothpaste for toddlers, growing children, and even adults?
