what is sustainability, and how can you practice it right now?

what is sustainability, and how can you practice it right now? Sustainability has become a huge buzzword across pretty much every industry. With so many agencies and companies talking about sustainability...it’s easy to lose sight of what it really involves...and get overwhelmed by the topic itself. In honor of Earth Month, we wanted to bring it back to the basics and revisit a few things:  What is sustainability...exactly? Why is sustainability important?  What can you do to live more sustainably right now? How is Davids committed to sustainability? For those of you who are already well-versed in this topic, don’t worry! You’ll get something out of this too. We made sure to include recent facts + figures, so that this article can provide everyone with some new info about sustainability! the basics: what is sustainability? The concept of sustainability first appeared in a forestry handbook in 1713, and it described a process in which you never harvest more than the forest can regenerate. Since then, the word has evolved a bunch of different times. When ecology became a discipline, the term was used in the context of all biological systems—not just forestry. At that point, sustainability described the ability of an ecosystem to conserve its biodiversity over time. You might be wondering...when did sustainability become all about humans? Because of course, eventually....it did. Sustainability didn’t begin to center around humans until the late 1900s, when human dependence on fossil fuels started to explode. At this point, sustainability began to focus on how humans live on the planet: the impacts of our actions, the availability of natural resources, and the requirements to maintain a healthy ecological balance. In 1987, the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations coined the term sustainable development, which is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.” This idea can be separated into three pillars: Social development: which promotes the overall well-being of humans and our societies. Healthy, sustainable communities ensure the respect and protection of personal, labor, and cultural rights...and access to basic needs and resources. Economic development: which involves systems that allow communities to maintain their independence and livelihood. Environmental protection: which holds humans accountable. It ensures that we don’t live in a way that damages our planet...ensuring that future generations have resources to live too. These days, you mostly hear about the latter. As a family-owned and operated sustainable toothpaste brand (and in the spirit of Earth Month), we’ll be focusing on the environmental side of things too. But keep in mind that environmental sustainability involves social and economic development by default, so promoting sustainable social + economic development is not lost on us. Although environmental sustainability can be discussed in so many different contexts (for example, from engineering to fashion)...we’ll be discussing it mainly in the context of consumerism. why is sustainability important? Let’s be honest, consumerism and the environment don’t have the healthiest relationship history.  Consumerism has changed drastically in the past few decades. In the 1990s and early 2000s population, technology, and culture sparked a massive increase in consumption that still continues (and continues to grow!) today. These consumer trends have a huge impact on different areas of environmental health and climate change. To name a few: Greenhouse gas emissions: consumerism makes up 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Water consumption: consumerism is responsible for 60–80% of global water use. Land use + misuse: higher consumer demand requires more intensive, unsustainable agricultural practices...often harming biodiversity. Waste: in 2020, consumerism generated 2.12 billion tons of waste. Globally, solid waste is expected to increase by 70% by 2050. Plastic pollution: every year, roughly 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean. By 2050, it’s expected that there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Sidenote: In the world of toothpaste, roughly 1.5 billion plastic tubes of toothpaste are thrown away every single year. This article is about a 7-minute read. That means roughly 20,000 plastic toothpaste tubes will be tossed in the trash while you read this blog. Here’s the good news: since we launched Davids over 10 years ago, our community has helped keep over 7.5 million plastic toothpaste tubes out of landfills and oceans! Not to mention the microplastics. That number is continuing to grow, and it’s proof that small changes really can lead to a huge impact. So, thank you Davids community! While consumerism is a broad subject...ranging from animal agriculture to toothpaste...the impacts of consumerism show that adopting more sustainable consumer habits across the board can make a massive difference in the health of the planet. Here are some simple tips to promote more sustainable consumer habits right now. easy tips to live more sustainably right now! calculate your carbon footprint If you haven’t already done this, it’s a great way to wake you up, analyze your impact, and adjust your actions. Your carbon footprint is the estimated total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that result from your daily actions. The average person in the U.S. has a carbon footprint of 16 tons...among the highest rates in the world. The global average is around 4 tons. This Carbon Footprint Calculator estimates your household footprint. It can help you identify your biggest areas of impact and encourage small, gradual changes that will help us avoid exceeding that 2℃ rise in global temperatures. At the very least, it can spark a mindset change when it comes to your daily actions and consumer behavior. We believe mindset is essential in living a more sustainable life. That’s why it’s next on the list! master your mindset When it comes to living more sustainably, mindset can take you a long, long way. Half of the battle is learning about the problem (which is why you’re here!) and using that knowledge to change your mindset around your daily actions and question things you might not normally question. An easy way to spark this mindset shift is to redefine the old “reduce, reuse, recycle” mentality. Instead, the method should look like: rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle—placing more emphasis on mindset. By adopting this method, you can better identify which things you really need and drastically decrease your impact. Let’s take a look at how far mindset can go in a single room... the bathroom, of course. The next time you’re in your bathroom, take a moment to simply think about the products that line your sink and shower. Consider asking yourself: Does each product add value to your life, or could you go without them in the future? Do they create unnecessary waste, or are they reusable, biodegradable, or recyclable? Does the product contain chemicals that will end up back in the environment? Can you identify any easy, more sustainable swaps for these products? Don’t forget, small changes (in mindset and in practice) can go a long way. Remember the 1.5 billion plastic toothpaste tubes thrown out every single year? If everyone simply thought twice about their toothpaste purchases and committed to using recyclable toothpaste tubes like Davids, it would make a huge difference. For more inspiration on sustainable swaps and ideas to reduce waste room by room, and one product at a time, check out the products and advice at the Zero Waste Cartel. explore minimalism If you didn’t already know this, we’re big fans of minimalism. Minimalism means intentionally choosing to live with less and focus more on the things that really matter, rather than just having more things. At Davids, from our ingredients to our design—and everything beyond and between—we believe in the value of simplicity. For example, fewer (but more thoughtful and intentional) ingredients can pack a huge punch of benefits without harming the planet. By adopting a “less is more” mentality, you can see major positive shifts in your health, relationships, finances, and more. But a minimalist mindset can also have a major positive impact on the planet. By striving toward minimalism, you can drastically decrease your footprint. In other words: our consumer demands may have created a lot of the sustainability issues we see today—but that also means our consumer demands have the power to fix them. switch to Davids At Davids, we’re committed to promoting sustainability through our own actions, including: sourcing: our ingredients are sustainably sourced, with 98% coming from the USA. This helps reduce our carbon footprint from international shipping and supports the US economy. All ingredients are naturally sourced and naturally derived, meaning they’re minimally processed and require less energy—plus, they’re safe for the planet when they go down the drain. manufacturing: we’re family-owned and operated, and everyone in our supply chain is paid above a living wage. Ethical production is part of the Davids DNA. packaging: from our aluminum toothpaste tubes to our cardboard boxes, we’re serious about sustainable packaging. Our tubes are not just recyclable—they’re endlessly recyclable. We also use FSC certified paperboard for all boxes to help prevent deforestation, and our caps are made from recyclable HDPE plastic. encouragement: we’re here to focus on the good. Sustainability is a journey—and we want to make it enjoyable, approachable, and inspiring every step of the way. And since sustainability can sometimes feel overwhelming...here’s some good news. In the last few years, we’ve already seen major shifts in consumer habits. A recent study found that 80% of consumers say sustainability is important when making purchasing decisions. Even more inspiring, the 2024 Voice of the Consumer survey from PwC found that 85% of consumers are willing to purchase sustainably produced or sourced goods—even in the face of inflation and rising costs. Now that’s something to celebrate. Harness that momentum. Keep making a positive impact, one simple shift at a time. And if you're ready to take the next step, switch to Davids oral care for maximum performance and impact. Buy Premium Toothpaste Now.
top 5 things to know about hydroxyapatite

top 5 things to know about hydroxyapatite

plus, get to know our groundbreaking Hydroxi™ formula   When it comes to oral care, nano-hydroxyapatite (also known as nHA or nHAp) is making waves as an exciting new ingredient. But with any breakthrough, it's only natural to wonder... Is it safe? Does it actually work? Which new products can you really trust? At Davids, we’re here to put those questions to rest with a deep dive into nano-hydroxyapatite and how our innovative Hydroxi™ formula raises the bar in oral care. From its proven safety (backed by the European Union’s scientific experts) to its remarkable ability to repair enamel and alleviate sensitivity, nHA offers a safer, more effective solution for a healthy mouth + healthy you. In a market flooded with misleading claims, it’s important to separate fact from fiction. That’s why we’re walking you through what information really matters, including the fact that: Nano-hydroxyapatite is considered a safe alternative for fluoride (and even an upgrade). Nano-hydroxyapatite presents an impressive case in the hydroxyapatite vs fluoride debate. Not all nano-hydroxyapatite products are created equal, even if they use high quality nHAp particles. So without further ado, let's dive into the top five things you need to know about nano-hydroxyapatite! Plus, explore how our unique Hydroxi™ formula outshines the competition, raises the bar in the world of holistic oral care, and supports stronger, healthier smiles for you and your entire family. 1: nano-hydroxyapatite is safe, as long as it’s SCCS-certified like our Hydroxi™ formula Compared to fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite is the new kid on the block. With any new product (especially one you put in your mouth every single day), it’s natural to wonder if it’s safe or not! So, is nano-hydroxyapatite safe? The answer is yes! We, alongside the EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), are here to ease your nerves about the safety of this incredible ingredient. If you haven’t heard of them before, the SCCS is an independent group of experts managed by the European Commission. Through careful research, they provide opinions on the health and safety of non-food consumer products like cosmetics, clothes, personal care products, and more. They recently published an opinion on the safety of nano-hydroxyapatite! Based on the latest data, the SCCS considers nano-hydroxyapatite safe if it meets the following conditions. The nano-hydroxyapatite particles are rod-shaped. The particles have a certain length-to-width ratio. The particles are uncoated or surface modified. The nHAp concentration is 10% or less in toothpaste. The nHAp concentration is 0.465% or less in mouthwash. Rest assured that the nano-hydroxyapatite particles used in Davids’ Hydroxi™ formula meet all these conditions! It’s worth noting that there’s only one nano-hydroxyapatite manufacturer worldwide that complies with these strict conditions. Because we care so deeply about ingredient quality and integrity at Davids, we source our nano-hydroxyapatite from this manufacturer. In this recent opinion, the SCCS confirmed that nano-hydroxyapatite particles that are needle-shaped are still not considered safe. This is because needle-shaped nano-hydroxyapatite particles may pose a risk of toxicity and absorption in a manner that’s not safe for human use. This is why it’s so important to understand and trust the source of nano-hydroxyapatite in your daily products! 2: Hydroxi™ is also non-toxic and biocompatible Now that we’ve covered the safety of our nHAp formula, let’s touch on a couple more safety-related things that make it so special. Unlike other sensitivity ingredients (like fluoride), Hydroxi™ is non-toxic and biocompatible. What exactly does that mean? Non-toxic means that it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals. Biocompatible means this special formula will do its job without causing any unexpected side effects when it touches the cells, tissues, systems, etc. in your body. This is great news for you and your whole family! You can enjoy peace of mind knowing you and your little ones won’t experience any unwanted side effects, which is super important when it comes to oral care products you use in your daily rituals (for the rest of your life). 3: why hydroxyapatite wins the hydroxyapatite vs fluoride debate how fluoride falls short For decades, fluoride has been the superstar remineralizing ingredient in the dental care world. It’s celebrated for its proven ability to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. It does so by using your saliva to “blend” calcium and phosphate to create a substance called fluorapatite. While it’s effective at remineralizing enamel to treat and prevent tooth sensitivity and decay, here are a few things to consider about fluoride. biological limitations: the effectiveness of fluoride can depend on your saliva, which must be rich in calcium and phosphate to form fluorapatite. If your saliva has a low phosphate or calcium concentration (or if you experience dry mouth), fluoride toothpaste and other fluoride products might be ineffective. a delicate balancing act: optimal levels of fluoride will depend on your unique oral microbiome and saliva makeup/production. It can be hard to strike the best level of fluoride for your mouth. Too little fluoride won’t provide the desired benefits, while too much fluoride can be harmful (which we’ll touch on next). safety concerns: there are many safety concerns associated with fluoride overexposure, which isn’t a great trait for an ingredient you might use every day in your oral care routine. Research suggests too much fluoride (through drinking water, oral health care products, and more) poses a risk of: Dental fluorosis, which can appear as white spots on your teeth Skeletal fluorosis, which can appear in the form of joint pain and stiffness Neurological complications (in some serious cases) With these limitations in mind, it’s worth exploring a smarter, safer alternative for dental health and enamel remineralization.... one that works with your body, not against it. Enter nano-hydroxyapatite! how nano-hydroxyapatite raises the bar Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite makes up 97% of your natural enamel (and a large percentage of your bone composition, too). Nano-hydroxyapatite is simply a refined, smaller version of the hydroxyapatite that already exists in your teeth! The nano-sized particles can penetrate deeper into your enamel and dentin to repair damage and remineralize weakened areas very efficiently. Here are a few more features of this amazing ingredient. not saliva dependent: nano-hydroxyapatite doesn’t rely on the minerals in your saliva to work. It already contains calcium and phosphate, adding more of these beneficial elements into your saliva on its own. It’s effective regardless of your saliva quality and quantity! biocompatibility: since your teeth are already made up of hydroxyapatite, they recognize and absorb the nano-sized particles. This allows those particles to remineralize your teeth by integrating into your tooth structure. Nano-particles work from the inside out, rather than just coating the tooth surface like fluoride. no known risk of overexposure: unlike fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite does not pose a risk of toxicity or overexposure (since it is recognized by the body). This makes it safe for all ages; it’s even considered a safe alternative to fluoride for children, people at risk of fluoride overexposure, and pregnant women. With its natural compatibility, deep remineralizing power, and trusted safety, we believe that nano-hydroxyapatite is more than just an effective alternative to fluoride; it’s an upgrade! 4: nano-hydroxyapatite doesn’t just soothe sensitive teeth, it repairs enamel Sensitivity is often caused when the hard protective outer layer of your teeth (the enamel) wears down over time. This exposes “dentin tubules” (tiny passageways) that lead to your tooth’s center nerve. Then, when you eat or drink something hot, cold, sugary, or acidic, it can trigger that ultra-sensitive center nerve. The good news? High-quality nano-hydroxyapatite can “plug” these passageways and repair your enamel to relieve sensitivity, strengthen your teeth, and even whiten your smile. Our Hydroxi™ formula uses only the highest quality nano-hydroxyapatite, giving it the ability to successfully plug those exposed tubules. Enamel remineralization by nano-hydroxyapatite isn't just surface-level repair or “numbing”! It’s a root-cause solution.   Other big-name tooth sensitivity products take a band-aid approach, numbing or coating your enamel to provide temporary relief. Some dental products use chemicals like potassium nitrate, a numbing agent that “works” by coating your teeth and blocking the pain receptors between your brain and your tooth’s nerve. Not only is this approach temporary and ineffective, it also goes against our love for the mind-body-mouth connection. As a holistic oral care company with a motto to nurture a healthy mouth + healthy you, we don’t believe in shutting off the connection between your body’s systems. Instead, we aim to honor and nurture your whole body, providing solutions like Hydroxi™ that are health-conscious, holistic, safe, and truly effective. 5: not all nano-hydroxyapatite products are created equal We’re excited that nano-hydroxyapatite has gained so much popularity in the dental care world, but this popularity can cause a frenzy. Some brands may rush to “hop on the bandwagon”, leading to products that may be ineffective, low-quality, and sometimes even dangerous. When looking for nano-hydroxyapatite products to add to your daily routine, it’s important to understand the differences and make informed decisions. Here are a few things to keep in mind. particle size: when it comes to hydroxyapatite toothpaste, you’ll want to make sure the particles are “nano” sized, not “micro” sized (as depicted in the photo above!). Only nano-sized particles (around 50 nm) are small enough to fill the microscopic damage in your tooth enamel. These nano-sized particles penetrate and bind to your enamel to remineralize it, protecting it from wear and tear and relieving sensitivity in the process. Larger particles simply can't penetrate enamel in the same way. particle shape / SCCS approval: we touched on this above, but you’ll want to ensure the specific nano-hydroxyapatite particles are rod-shaped and approved by the SCCS. Other shapes, such as needle, circle, or “irregular” are not considered safe and effective. Some companies out there may opt for needle-shaped particles as a way to save money, but these particles are banned in the EU for concerns regarding cell damage and toxicity! nano-hydroxyapatite performance, not percentage: some companies might emphasize a certain percentage of nano-hydroxyapatite in their oral care products, claiming that high percentages correlate with better performance. This is simply not true, especially when those companies don’t have lab test results or any compelling data to back up their performance claims. Any product that focuses on the percentage of nHAp without proof of performance should be reconsidered. At Davids, we focus on scientific evidence from the SCCS and lab results from a trusted third-party lab to confirm the safety and impressive performance of our Hydroxi™ formula. This way, we can help you avoid the confusion that comes with sifting through all the nHAp products on the market. You can smile wide knowing that Hydroxi™ is one of the safest, most effective formulas you can choose. discover Davids Hydroxi™, the new gold standard in oral care To recap, we touched on a few reasons to love our Hydroxi™ formula, including the fact that it contains the only nano-hydroxyapatite approved by the SCCS. But if that were the only special thing about Hydroxi™, it wouldn’t be enough to set us apart from the competition. So, what makes Hydroxi™ unique? The true secret lies in how we blend SCCS-approved nano-hydroxyapatite with carefully selected, high quality, naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients. Each component in Hydroxi™ is of the highest quality and purity....and serves a unique and important purpose. For example, our premium xylitol and vegetable glycerin stimulate saliva production to flush away bacteria and pave the way for those nano-hydroxyapatite particles to swoop in and remineralize your tooth enamel. Meanwhile, our premium baking soda, mint oils, and coconut oil work to fight harmful bacteria, polish your teeth, and maintain a healthy pH in your mouth. These are just a few examples, but we hope they give you an idea of the intention and care that went into formulating Hydroxi™. If you’re still curious, you can explore more of our ingredients here. Finally, we couldn’t leave without sharing our third-party lab test results with you. When compared with six other leading “sensitive” toothpastes, Hydroxi™ proved to be the most effective at plugging exposed tubules in just five days of consistent brushing. While other companies make claims about the quality of their nano-hydroxyapatite products, we’re proud to back up our claims with real evidence from an independent lab. When you brush with Hydroxi™ nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste, you can rest assured that you’re experiencing the new gold standard in oral care. Are you ready to switch to a safer, more effective toothpaste? Try Davids’ Hydroxi™ formula and experience the difference for yourself! buy now.

bright smiles blooming: a spring clean for your best oral care routine

It’s that time of year again! As spring brightens up the world around us with its fresh blossoms and rejuvenating sunshine, it’s only natural to feel inspired to brighten up your daily routine. We invite you to turn “spring cleaning” into whatever you want it to be. Whether it’s decluttering your closet, deep cleaning your living spaces, or overhauling your products to create the best oral care routine, spring cleaning offers a great opportunity to start this new, vibrant season on the freshest possible note. At Davids, you’ve probably heard that we value a fresh and clean oral care routine that truly honors the link between oral health and overall health. What exactly do we mean by that? Read on to find out! link between oral health and overall health We feel we can never say this enough: your oral health is the window to your overall health. In other words, your oral health impacts so many different systems in your body. To be more specific, your oral health has the power to impact your... gut health: this one is probably the most literal example because your mouth is the actual window to your gut. Your saliva production, the bacterial balance in your oral microbiome, the sensitivity level of your teeth, etc. all impact what you eat, how you digest it, and what species of bacteria travel to your gut. All of these things can have massive impacts on your overall comfort, mood, sleep quality, bowel movements, and beyond. cardiovascular health: did you know that gum disease can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke by 2-3x? This is because gum disease greatly increases your body’s overall inflammation load. If you suffer from gum disease, we want to assure you not to let this generate fear. Instead, let it generate motivation since gum disease can be treated and even reversed at its early stages! skin health: it’s been shown that your gut health plays a huge role in your skin health, but research also shows a direct link between oral health and acne. Poor oral health and various oral complications can cause an overgrowth of bacteria. Some species of these bad bacteria (like propionibacterium) are infamous for their ability to cause acne breakouts. mental health: all of the things we listed above can directly impact your mental health. Many scientists are even nicknaming the gut “the second brain” due to its ability to dictate messages to your brain through bacteria and nerve cells. And we just discussed how your oral health can make or break your gut health! Now that we’ve talked about the link between oral health and overall health, let’s dive into some oral care ingredients and habits to avoid…and how to curate the best oral care routine with Davids. toothpaste ingredients to avoid To spring clean your oral care routine and nurture your oral and overall health, here are a few common toothpaste ingredients to avoid. Be sure to check your current products for these infamous ingredients! fluoride: although fluoride is known to strengthen your enamel, it’s also known to be harmful if consumed in large amounts (which can happen if you live in an area that produces fluoridated drinking water). This is why all toothpastes that contain fluoride must also contain a poison control warning! We much prefer swapping fluoride with its natural counterpart, hydroxyapatite. sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): SLS is a chemical foaming agent and a very common irritant in conventional toothpaste and other cosmetic products. It can strip your body of its natural oils, clog your pores, and cause stinging and irritation in your mouth and on your skin. All of our toothpaste formulas use a natural alternative to SLS called sodium cocoyl glutamate, which is derived from coconut materials. parabens: parabens in toothpaste can lead to unnecessary inflammation in your mouth and throughout your entire body. They are also linked to endocrine disruption. In the ingredient list, the names of these harmful chemicals end in “paraben.” artificial colors: vibrant blue and purple toothpastes get their color from artificial dyes which might appear as “FD&C BLUE NO. 1 OR D&C BLUE NO. 4” on the ingredient list. Research shows that these dyes can have toxic effects throughout the body. “flavor”: unspecified flavor is a cop-out ingredient that many companies use to “protect” their proprietary formulas and infuse products with less-than-healthy ingredients. If an oral care company (or any company for that matter) is not willing to disclose what goes into their “flavor,” we strongly suggest staying away from their products! peroxides: you might find hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide in some whitening toothpaste, but these ingredients are more commonly found in mouthwash and whitening strips. Peroxides are known to whiten, but they’re also infamous for releasing harmful free radicals and causing inflammation, irritation, bleeding, and more. Be sure to opt for whitening products that utilize PAP instead of peroxides, since PAP is much safer and gentler for your oral and overall health. If you’re unsure about your toothpaste/mouthwash ingredients, be sure to cross check them on the EWG skin deep database, where health experts call out specific toothpaste ingredients to avoid! You can rest assured that our formulas do not contain any of these ingredients, which is why our toothpaste is EWG verified. In other words, it meets the EWG’s strictest standards for health and safety, so you can feel good about using our products to curate the best oral care routine. best oral care routine Now, it wouldn’t be like us to only talk about the bad! Let’s dive into the best oral care routine to align with your spring clean! Of course, it’s centered around our natural, effective, and carefully formulated oral care products. safe floss: our expanding dental floss is perfect for cleaning out hard-to-reach bacteria and debris, which helps to restore balance in your mouth and your body. It’s infused with remineralizing hydroxyapatite, nature-derived xylitol, smooth vegan wax, and antibacterial cocoa butter. It’s also woven with fibers that are derived from recycled plastic, and it comes in an infinitely reusable dispenser! It’s a great spring cleaning item for you and the planet. premium toothpaste: every single one of our toothpaste formulas avoids the harmful ingredients we discussed in the previous section. They also contain carefully curated ingredients that nurture your oral and overall health. Forget fluoride and unspecified “flavors,” and replace them with our incredible hydroxyapatite particles and premium peppermint oils. Our toothpaste formulas are the perfect foundation for the best oral care routine! bamboo toothbrush: our bamboo toothbrush is one of the most sustainable options for you and the planet. It’s naturally antibacterial, it’s made with BPA-free bristles derived from castor oil (instead petroleum oil like conventional toothbrushes), and it’s biodegradable! stainless steel tongue scraper: our single-handed stainless steel tongue scraper is preferred by dental professionals because it effortlessly swipes away bacteria in a more comfortable (less gag-y) way than other tongue scrapers. It’s also dishwasher safe, so you can continue that spring clean feeling all year long. natural mouthwash: peroxide-free mouthwash is a safe, effective way to give your mouth an extra clean feeling to reveal a bright white smile. Stay tuned for some special news for us about peroxide-free, remineralizing mouthwash! At Davids, it goes without saying that we truly care about the link between oral health and overall health. You can rest (and brush) assured knowing that all of our products only use intentional ingredients to nurture your holistic health. buy now.

When it comes to lasting radiance, your enamel deserves a little extra love, and nano-hydroxyapatite knows exactly how to deliver. Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-Ha or nHAp for short) is an innovative ingredient with a unique ability to bind to your enamel and smooth out micro-imperfections. Because hydroxyapatite naturally exists in your enamel (making up roughly 97% of its composition), the nano-hydroxyapatite in your Davids toothpaste has the ability to bond and integrate with the hydroxyapatite that already exists in your enamel (to remineralize and strengthen it).  Unlike some other ingredients you’ll find in sensitivity oral care products (like fluoride and potassium nitrate), nano-hydroxyapatite is... biocompatible: meaning it won’t cause any unplanned/unwanted side effects non-toxic: meaning it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals It clings to your enamel to remineralize weakened areas and block exposed nerve passageways. The result is a brighter, healthier smile that feels as good as it looks. What more could you ask for this Valentine’s Day? That said, it’s important to note that not all nano-hydroxyapatite products are created equal. Meet Hydroxi™, our groundbreaking blend of nano-hydroxyapatite and carefully selected, naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients that work together to remineralize your enamel, reduce sensitivity, and brighten your smile. Hydroxi™ uses the highest quality nano-hydroxyapatite with exceptional purity, and it’s the only one approved for sale by European authorities! Paired with our other premium ingredients, Hydroxi™ outperforms other leading sensitive toothpaste products. But you don’t have to take our word for it! We sent samples of Hydroxi™ (and other competing products) to a trusted third-party lab, and the results speak for themselves. All photo and numerical evidence revealed that Hydroxi™ repaired the enamel more effectively than the other products. It plugs exposed passageways that lead to your tooth’s sensitive center nerve. By effectively repairing imperfections in your enamel, our nano-hydroxyapatite formula also works to whiten your teeth in a healthy, restorative way. Unlike other peroxide-based whitening products that damage your enamel and make your teeth feel ultra-sensitive after use, Hydroxi™ remineralizes your enamel as it whitens, revealing a bright smile without the pain. On top of that, our ingredients also work together to freshen your breath, a very important detail as we head into Valentine’s Day!   fresh breath....for your closest moments What better time to check in with your breath than Valentine’s Day? If you’ve been missing that “fresh out of the dentist office” feeling, our toothpaste can help. What makes Davids the best toothpaste for fresh breath? Every ingredient in our toothpaste plays a specific role in taming bad bacteria, maintaining a healthy pH, polishing your teeth, reducing dry mouth, repairing your enamel, and more. What do all of these features have in common? They all contribute to fresh breath! So in honor of Valentine’s Day, let’s explore a few of these special ingredients and how they make Davids the best toothpaste for fresh breath. nano-hydroxyapatite: we discussed this one in the last section, but Hydroxi™ works to remineralize your enamel, which indirectly helps with bad breath! When you have healthy, strong enamel, that means fewer scratches, holes, and imperfections. This reduces the available surface area for bacteria to hang out, which can reduce harmful acids, plaque buildup, and the bad breath that comes with those things. xylitol: our USA-produced xylitol comes from birch trees and has the unique ability to stimulate saliva production to reduce dry mouth, tame bad bacteria, and balance the pH of your mouth for fresh healthy breath. micro abrasives: don’t be scared of the word abrasive! So let’s pause the Valentine’s Day chat for just a moment to talk about what gum disease is....and how diligent oral care with Davids can help you prevent it. Gum disease occurs when bacteria infect your gum tissue, causing redness, inflammation, bleeding, pain, and more. You might find gum disease masked under different names, such as gingivitis (early stage) or periodontitis (late, severe stage). As you can see, gum disease is broken into different stages, stressing the importance of early prevention and detection. You have the power to stop gum disease in its tracks, and our products are here to help you do just that (with professional guidance from your dentist, of course). To help you prevent and/or stop gum disease in its tracks, we’ve outlined an effective Davids oral care routine below. floss once daily with our expanding dental floss: flossing and gum disease have a unique relationship since flossing can clean the hard-to-reach areas between your teeth and along your gum line. Don’t overlook this important step in your healthy gum routine! brush twice daily with our natural toothpaste: by fighting bad bacteria, plaque, and harmful acids, every flavor of our toothpaste works to clean and care for your gums, teeth, and entire oral microbiome. scrape your tongue with our stainless steel tongue scraper: to reduce the bad bacteria that live on your tongue and love to travel to your teeth and gums! freshen up as needed: in honor of Valentine’s Day, why not brush and floss after your meals, too? Remember, brushing twice daily is the minimum recommendation! While we’re on the topic of a healthy gum routine, let’s dive a little deeper into our oral care lineup—an intentional collection of premium products for a healthy mouth + healthy you. premium oral care that loves you back ♡ Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or Gum Disease Awareness Month, we're proud to offer you a collection of premium oral care products that love you back. expanding dental floss: as we mentioned above, fresh breath and a healthy smile don’t stop at toothpaste! Without it, you could be leaving bacteria in those tiny crevices, allowing them to sneakily “eat away” at your enamel, harm your gums, and cause bad breath. Our floss is also infused with nano-hydroxyapatite to help remineralize those tight areas of your teeth for your healthiest, freshest smile yet. stainless steel tongue scraper: bacteria love to live on your tongue. Our single-handed, stainless steel tongue scraper is uniquely designed to gently scrape bacteria off the surface of your tongue, freshening your breath in ways flossing and brushing can’t. On top of that, tongue scraping works to detoxify your mouth, aid digestion, improve your taste, and more. If you haven’t tried tongue scraping, get ready for freshness you’ve never felt before! bamboo toothbrush: are you looking for a biodegradable toothbrush that shows the planet some love too? Our toothbrush sports a 100% bamboo handle, which you can compost in just a few weeks. (Don’t worry, we’re not offended.) But you might be surprised to learn about love’s important role in the Davids story. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, we wanted to let you in on the secret love message you can find on every box of Davids.  In the early years of creating Davids, Eric (our founder’s name is Eric...that’s another story) created all the artwork himself, inspired by minimalism and modern design. Launching Davids was a three-year process that involved many ups and downs. When the time came for Eric to finalize the artwork, he felt there was still something missing.  It needed some sort of special tribute...a symbol to represent all the love and support that his wife Annette had given him through all those ups and downs. Her love and support played a huge role in making his crazy dream come true, so naturally...Eric added a secret love code to the packaging as a special tribute to Annette.  Ready to learn about this secret love message? D2MFVAMB stands for: “Dedicated To My Forever Valentine, Annette (Middle) (Last)”. From the very first box of Davids up to today, every single box has carried (and will continue to carry) this special tribute of Eric’s love for his wife Annette...and now you’re in on the secret!   happy valentine’s day! Happy Valentine’s Day from Eric and the entire Davids team! We can’t thank you enough for supporting our brand, loving our lineup of premium oral care products, believing in our vision, and being a part of our journey. bleeding gums love at first floss: valentine’s day meets gum disease awareness month

love at first floss: valentine’s day meets gum disease awareness month

It's almost Valentine's Day, so naturally, we're talking about love! And by that, we mean love for your gums...because February is also Gum Disease Awareness Month. So along with the chocolates, cards, teddy bears, and romantic dates, we invite you to carve out some time to optimize your oral care routine for a healthy mouth + healthy you. To get you started, we're brushing up on the causes and stages of gum disease, how gum disease is connected to other health concerns, why early detection and prevention are so important, and the special relationship between flossing and gum disease. what is gum disease? Gum disease is a bacterial infection in the gum tissue, which can lead to inflammation, tissue damage, and so much more. You might find gum disease disguised under different names, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, or periodontal disease. Here's a brief look at what these names mean. gingivitis refers to the early, mild stages of gum disease. At this point, you can reverse the issue with diligent oral care and help from your dentist and hygienist. periodontitis (aka periodontal disease) covers the more serious, late stages of gum disease. At this point, your gums can separate from your teeth (leaving pockets for bacteria). You can also experience bone loss. While this stage cannot be reversed, it can be managed with help from your dentist. As you can see, gum disease prevention (and early treatment) are both very important. Here are a few symptoms to look out for as early red flags for gum disease, especially if they're persistent.  red, purple, or swollen gums gum bleeding gum recession tooth sensitivity, especially around your gums pain with chewing changes in your bite alignment loose teeth Now that we've covered what gum disease is, let's dive into some common issues.   what causes gum disease? While there are so many different causes of gum disease, we've outlined a few common ones below. plaque buildup from poor oral hygiene genetics smoking and excessive drinking chronic dry mouth rapid hormonal changes autoimmune disease certain medications crooked or crowded teeth dental work (like fillings, implants, and bridges) stress! The good news is that you can craft a diligent oral care routine for gum disease prevention!   why is gum disease prevention so important? Did you know that gum disease is a warning sign for larger, systematic diseases? Below we've outlined a few common whole-body conditions linked to gum disease. heart disease and stroke: bacteria in your mouth can travel through your bloodstream to your heart's blood vessels, leading to complications. diabetes: gum disease can also disrupt your blood sugar regulation. If you have diabetes (or if you're at risk), you'll want to look out for signs of gum disease. cognitive issues: recent research suggests that gum disease could be linked to dementia and may speed up cognitive decline. It's no surprise that scientists are also linking metabolic issues (aka problems with blood sugar regulation) to dementia too...based on our last bullet point! respiratory infections: the bacteria from gum disease can also travel to your lungs, worsening respiratory issues like COPD, pneumonia, and more. On top of that, people who already have existing respiratory issues might have weakened immune systems that make them more susceptible to gum disease. We know this sounds scary, but it's so important to know, so you can keep a watchful eye on your gum health. If you start to experience sudden bleeding, swelling, or redness, get your gums checked out right away!   the relationship between flossing and gum disease It's true that every step in your oral care routine plays an important role in preventing and treating gum disease. But flossing and gum disease have a unique relationship.  Unlike brushing alone, flossing can clean the tight spaces between your teeth and areas along your gum line. This is why dental professionals recommend flossing once daily! Davids expanding floss is designed to scrub away bacteria and plaque in these pesky places to help you prevent gum disease and other oral health complications Many new flossers often experience gum bleeding, which can sometimes be a false alarm for gum disease. Here's what we mean: when you first start flossing, the impact of the floss on your gums can cause some bleeding. This is because (1) your gums aren't used to it (2) you're pressing too hard or (3) both! If your gums bleed as you go, we know it can be tempting to toss the floss altogether. But we want to remind you bleeding can be a sign that your gums need consistent flossing. So we recommend proceeding with caution. give it a week: continue to floss daily with proper technique for one week. Proper technique includes careful, gentle movements, wrapping the floss around each tooth and gently gliding it up and down. If the bleeding persists... visit your dentist: they can assess you for gum disease and recommend next steps to stop the bleeding and discomfort   your healthy gum + mouth routine for v-day Isn't it a funny coincidence that Valentine's Day falls within Gum Disease Awareness Month? In honor of these two occasions, we outlined an effective oral care routine to keep your gums and teeth feeling healthy and happy. floss once daily with Davids expanding dental floss: now you know flossing and gum disease have a unique relationship, so be sure to keep up with this daily ritual for your gum health! brush twice daily with Davids natural toothpaste: every flavor in our lineup is formulated with ingredients that work together to tame bacteria, scrub your teeth, prevent dry mouth, maintain a healthy mouth pH, and nurture your gum health. scrape your tongue with Davids stainless steel tongue scraper: this removes extra bacteria that love to sit in the pores and grooves of your tongue (and make their way to your gums).  freshen up as needed: don't forget to add in some extra brushing and flossing after your meals. It's Valentine's Day after all! schedule dental appointments: gum disease prevention (and early detection) are crucial. We encourage you to visit your dentist every six months for a deep cleaning and professional assessment. Why not schedule those appointments now? Did you know that every one of our toothpaste boxes contains a secret love message? If you look closely, you'll find "D2MFBAMB" printed on your Davids box. hydroxyapatite vs. fluoride: how does it compare to the oral care superstar?

hydroxyapatite vs. fluoride: how does it compare to the oral care superstar?

Being the new kid on the block isn’t easy. While hydroxyapatite toothpaste is (rightfully) gaining popularity, it doesn’t come without a little skepticism. After all, fluoride has been on the market for so long. Does hydroxyapatite even compare? If it does, why haven’t you heard of it before now? Is there even a real need to change from fluoride to hydroxyapatite? Change is hard. We know, change is hard. But keeping an open mind about your oral care and holistic health is important. And don’t worry, we’re here to answer all your questions. That’s why we’re diving deeper into one of the most common questions: how does hydroxyapatite compare to fluoride? First, let’s start with the history. why has fluoride been the go-to for so long? Fluoride was the first one to the party. In the early 20th century, dental professionals began to investigate the effects of fluoride on tooth decay. Once they realized it could do the job, local governments started adding fluoride to their drinking water (around 1950), and these cities saw impressive tooth decay reduction. Boom, fluoride became a hero ingredient, and it’s been famous in the oral care world ever since. This makes sense, tooth decay rates were dwindling, but at what cost? In our humble opinion, there wasn’t enough evidence to fully understand the long-term effects of fluoride consumption and use. At that point, there was such a great need for relief and fluoride was the only reasonable answer. Dental professionals didn’t have the time to wait around for another safer, more natural ingredient that could get the job done. Fast forward to 1970. While fluoride is flourishing in the eyes of the public, with nearly 45% of Americans drinking fluoridated water and the ADA promoting fluoride toothpaste, NASA (yes, space NASA) began to experiment with hydroxyapatite. Scientists at NASA experimented with hydroxyapatite, testing its effectiveness in repairing the teeth and bones of astronauts returning from microgravity environments. Hint: hydroxyapatite proved to be super effective, so a Japanese company named Sangi Co. LTD purchased the rights from NASA and made the first commercial nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste in 1978. Since then, hydroxyapatite has proven to effectively remineralize enamel to prevent tooth decay and provide tooth sensitivity relief. In fact, it’s still considered the gold standard of oral health in Japan. But in other parts of the world, it’s up against a much bigger superstar, fluoride, that has been dominating the market for decades. Dominating the market for decades means we have years and years’ worth of data on fluoride. Hydroxyapatite simply hasn’t had a fair chance. how do hydroxyapatite and fluoride differ in action? It’s no secret that hydroxyapatite and fluoride are both effective in preventing and repairing tooth decay and strengthening the enamel. Fluoride works by mixing with the calcium and phosphate in your saliva to create a powerful substance called fluorapatite. When fluoride is present in your saliva (emphasis on when, because it doesn’t stick around), it forms a barrier on the surface of your tooth to protect it from acid attacks and harmful bacteria. Fluoride is only effective when you get it from multiple sources several times per day....through your drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. because it has to be present and readily available for your saliva to transport it. Hydroxyapatite, on the other hand, already exists in your enamel, so when you use hydroxyapatite toothpaste, it feels “at home,” effortlessly mimicking your existing enamel and effectively binding to your tooth’s surface. Once it binds to the enamel, it repairs and remineralizes, fortifying your enamel at the source. In fact, research shows that hydroxyapatite has the ability to increase the microhardness of your enamel. A few other key distinctions between hydroxyapatite and fluoride are listed below. toxicity exposure: too much exposure to fluoride can lead to fluoride toxicity, aka dental and/or skeletal fluorosis, which both have unpleasant side effects. That’s why fluoride toothpastes sport a poison control label. In contrast, hydroxyapatite is non-toxic and biomimetic, so there’s no risk of overexposure or need for a poison control label. This is great news for everyone, but even more so for children, pregnant women, and people whose water supply is highly fluoridated. naturally occurring: both ingredients are found in nature. Fluoride naturally exists in the earth’s crust, but only hydroxyapatite naturally exists in your body.  microbiome compatibility: because hydroxyapatite is biocompatible (aka it already exists in your body and works with your body’s natural systems and materials) it’s better for your oral and gut microbiomes. Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite also doesn’t automatically kill off the good, essential bacteria in your oral and gut microbiomes. teeth sensitivity relief: some research and first-hand claims confirm that hydroxyapatite may be better at relieving teeth hypersensitivity. In our own third-party lab tests, we’ve seen that Davids Sensitive + Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste was more effective at plugging tubules and repairing the enamel than leading fluoride toothpastes Colgate Sensitive and Sensodyne Pronamel. whitening: unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite has the ability to whiten your teeth without any help from other whitening ingredients. It does so by penetrating the enamel, repairing imperfections, and replenishing minerals at the source. The result is a pearly white smile. To us, trying this revolutionary formula is a no-brainer. what does the research say? We’ve already mentioned that the evidence supporting hydroxyapatite is strong, but here are a few scientific studies that confirm this. Comparison of hydroxyapatite and fluoride oral care gels for remineralization of initial caries: a pH-cycling study reveals that hydroxyapatite was as effective at remineralizing dental caries as fluoride. Remineralization of early caries by a nano-hydroxyapatite dentifrice concludes that nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste is an effective alternative to fluoride toothpaste. Remineralization Potential of New Toothpaste Containing Nano-Hydroxyapatite shows that nano-hydroxyapatite is effective at remineralization, and the addition of fluoride had no further effect on remineralization. Enamel remineralization and repair results of Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite toothpaste on deciduous teeth: an effective option to fluoride toothpaste compared hydroxyapatite toothpaste with two toothpastes with different fluoride concentrations, and concludes that hydroxyapatite toothpaste is an effective, non-toxic substitute for fluoride. Science has spoken! You can find more scientific studies on hydroxyapatite here. what could the future hold? Hydroxyapatite is still up against fluoride’s decades of marketing, but that’s all the more reason to give it a try. In fact, Dr. B of Ask the Dentist reveals that many children already exceed the recommended dose of fluoride from toothpaste alone. Consider fluoridated drinking water and the fluoride treatments given in a traditional dental visit....and you have a recipe for toxicity. For reasons like this, Dr. B (and we) see a bright future for hydroxyapatite....one where hydroxyapatite reduces our reliance on fluoride toothpaste, treatments, and drinking water and opens our minds to new natural and non-toxic methods of preventive and restorative oral care. Looking for a change of paste? Try Davids Sensitive + Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste. It provides all the benefits of fluoride toothpaste....naturally, without any side effects. buy now.

hydroxyapatite toothpaste for kids hydroxyapatite vs fluoride: which one wins for little smiles?

hydroxyapatite vs fluoride: which one wins for little smiles?

Did you know there’s a superhero ingredient that can remineralize your child’s teeth from the inside out? Hydroxyapatite (also known as nano-hydroxyapatite or n-ha) is ready to step into the oral care spotlight after years of fluoride stealing the show. Hydroxyapatite is an incredible mineral that already makes up most of our teeth and bones. It works as a repair tool to remineralize your (and your little one’s) enamel without many of the risks that come with fluoride. Our proprietary blend of nano-hydroxyapatite with naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients, called Hydroxi™, is safe, non-toxic, and lab-tested. And all photo and data evidence from the lab reveal: Hydroxi™ is extremely effective at repairing and remineralizing enamel. It even outperformed some of the most popular sensitive toothpaste formulas! In honor of hydroxyapatite's claim to fame and the power of Hydroxi™, let’s explore hydroxyapatite vs fluoride, why we prefer hydroxyapatite for kids, and how it’s changing the oral care game. Because when it comes to your child’s smile, you deserve a solution that makes you smile too! hydroxyapatite vs fluoride: what’s the deal? Enter the great oral care debate: hydroxyapatite vs fluoride. What are these two ingredients, and how are they different? To start, fluoride and hydroxyapatite are both naturally occurring minerals that bring important positive powers to the world of oral health. Fluoride exists in your bones and teeth in trace amounts. When you use fluoride through your oral care, it promotes your body’s natural remineralization process, but it doesn’t operate at the core of the remineralization process the way hydroxyapatite does. Hydroxyapatite already makes up about 65–70% of your bones and 95-97% of your enamel. When you use hydroxyapatite through your oral care routine, it’s able to bond and integrate with the hydroxyapatite that already exists in your teeth. To explain this to your little ones, you can say the hydroxyapatite in your toothpaste wiggles its way into the enamel....filling, hugging, and sticking to the spots that need it most for extra support! As you can see, both fluoride and hydroxyapatite can be beneficial. So let’s travel back in time to see how these two get pitted against each other in the oral care world. Fluoride entered the scene back in 1945 when a US city started adding it to drinking water in hopes of reducing tooth decay. It worked! Since then, it’s been the go-to remineralizing ingredient in US oral care, which is why the American Dental Association will only approve toothpaste that contains fluoride. Hydroxyapatite, on the other hand, was a little late to the oral care party. In 1970, NASA started using hydroxyapatite to help astronauts regain strength in their bones and teeth. It worked too! After that, Japan started using nano-hydroxyapatite in toothpaste, and it’s remained their go-to remineralizing ingredient ever since. Because these two have been so popular and effective in oral care routines worldwide (and nano-hydroxyapatite has recently become more popular in fluoride-dominated markets), the great hydroxyapatite vs fluoride debate remains a hot topic. Now that we’ve covered some of the history, let’s dive into which one we prefer for kids toothpaste. fluoride: friend or foe for kids? When it comes to kids toothpaste, many parents start to question fluoride…no matter how much it promotes remineralization. Can you relate? After all, little ones are very prone to swallowing toothpaste while they brush....and every fluoride toothpaste comes with this warning: “Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.” We agree that this isn’t a very comforting message to find on your little one’s toothpaste (or your own)! It reaffirms the fact that fluoride can be toxic in large doses. It’s important to note that you can only typically reach this “dose” if you’re getting too much fluoride from multiple sources, such as drinking water and oral care products. But when it comes to little ones, swallowing that flavorful fluoride toothpaste can pose some concerns. That’s why we lean more towards fluoride being a foe for kids toothpaste. We prefer fluoride-free hydroxyapatite toothpaste for kids. hydroxyapatite swoops in for strong enamel Because hydroxyapatite already makes up the foundation of your teeth and bones, those tiny hydroxyapatite particles in your toothpaste feel at home when they hit your enamel. Unlike fluoride, hydroxyapatite is: biocompatible: meaning hydroxyapatite will do its job without causing any unplanned side effects when it comes in contact with your body non-toxic: meaning hydroxyapatite also doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals. This is great news for you and your little ones! On top of that, research has found that it’s just as effective (if not more effective) than fluoride when it comes to remineralizing enamel! Here are a few examples that show the safety and efficacy of hydroxyapatite. Compared to two fluoride toothpastes in this 2019 study, researchers confirmed that hydroxyapatite is a safe, effective substitute. This 2019 study found that hydroxyapatite is equal to fluoride in remineralizing enamel and preventing demineralization…and might be the safer alternative. This 2022 study confirms that hydroxyapatite products are a safe alternative to fluoride, especially for young kids at risk of fluoride overexposure. The science speaks for itself! what makes Davids hydroxyapatite, Hydroxi™, different? At Davids, we came up with our very own secret blend of hydroxyapatite mixed with other incredible ingredients, which we nicknamed Hydroxi™. We love that nano-hydroxyapatite is gaining so much more popularity in the oral care world, but it’s important to note that not all hydroxyapatite toothpaste is created equal! We gave ours a name to portray just how much it stands out from the competition. Here are a few ways Hydroxi™ shines among its peers. special formula: Hydroxi™ is made with nano-hydroxyapatite of a specific concentration and purity level to deliver superior results in enamel repair and sensitivity relief. lab-tested superior results: these “superior results” have been put to the test by a trusted third-party lab. After five days of brushing twice per day, Hydroxi™ effectively repaired enamel better than some very popular competing sensitive toothpaste products. paired with incredible ingredients: our nano-hydroxyapatite works alongside ingredients like xylitol, glycerin, baking soda, peppermint essential oils, and beyond to deliver even more awesome benefits for your mouth and teeth. swish smarter: why you should choose hydroxyapatite mouthwash over bright bottles

When it comes to oral health, we’ll be the first to tell you that a strong daily routine can make all the difference. While brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping are essential, there’s one more step that can really elevate your ritual: nano hydroxyapatite mouthwash. From targeting hard-to-reach crevices to supporting enamel remineralization, the right mouthwash formula can deliver a refreshing boost while nurturing (not disrupting) your oral microbiome. But always remember: not all mouthwash is created equal. So before you reach for that bright bottle on the drugstore shelf, let’s explore why conventional mouthwash options might fall short…and how hydroxyapatite mouthwash offers a healthier, more holistic approach. do I need mouthwash? If you’ve been craving an extra-fresh feeling after you brush, you might want to add mouthwash to your daily oral care routine. But it’s important for us to highlight that mouthwash cannot work alone! Please don’t try replacing your current oral care routine with mouthwash. Instead, think of it as the cherry on top of an incredibly fresh holistic oral care routine. After brushing, flossing, and scraping your tongue, consider adding mouthwash to… reach tight crevices your toothbrush can’t: it’s a liquid after all. It can flow through tight crevices to reach spots your toothbrush (and even your floss) can’t. flush out leftover particles: this one speaks for itself. Swishing with mouthwash can dislodge debris and microorganisms that brushing and flossing missed. Beware of conventional mouthwash though (ones that claim to kill 99.9% of germs) because these formulas can wipe out the good bacteria in your microbiome. Instead, try mouthwash with hydroxyapatite (and without harsh chemicals). Instead of wiping out your entire oral microbiome, hydroxyapatite mouthwash works to strike a healthy balance between good and bad bacteria. remineralize your enamel: when you swish with hydroxyapatite mouthwash (which we’ll discuss more below), it can deliver remineralizing nanoparticles to hard-to-reach spots on your teeth. Hydroxyapatite particles do their best work when they get to sit on your teeth untouched. After you swish with hydroxyapatite mouthwash, don’t rinse with water! Let it linger, so those nanoparticles can sink into your enamel and remineralize it from the inside out. freshen your breath: once you try swishing with a healthy, non-chemical mouthwash with hydroxyapatite, you’ll see that there’s no fresher feeling…or fresher breath. With that being said, let’s explore the downsides of conventional mouthwash. what’s wrong with conventional mouthwash? When we say conventional mouthwash, we mean the mouthwash options that have dominated the drugstore shelves for years. These options typically glow bright green, blue, purple, and yellow with chemical dyes, so they’re hard to miss! Conventional mouthwash might dominate the oral care world (and look “pretty” doing it), but it has its dirty side. Unlike chemical-free mouthwash with hydroxyapatite (which we’ll brush up on next), conventional mouthwash can… destroy good bacteria: the harsh chemicals and alcohol in conventional mouthwash work to wipe out all the bacteria in your mouth, no matter how good they are. Good bacteria, like streptococcus salivarius, lactobacillus, and bifidobacterium actually work to fight bad bacteria, maintain a healthy pH, aid fiber digestion, produce vitamins, and prevent infection. Why would you want to wipe them out? dry out your mouth: alcohol is directly linked with dry mouth, so why would you put it in an oral care product? Hydroxyapatite mouthwash contains intentional ingredients that prevent dry mouth, not cause it. imbalance your oral pH: by wiping out good bacteria and drying out your mouth, conventional mouthwash can throw off the pH in your mouth, making it more acidic and prone to oral care issues. contain many irritating ingredients: in addition to drying out your mouth, some chemical ingredients in mouthwash can cause mouth sores, stinging, burning, bleeding, and beyond. If you want to keep mouthwash in your oral care lineup but avoid these downsides, we encourage you to turn to mouthwash with hydroxyapatite. what you’ll find in the best hydroxyapatite mouthwash The best hydroxyapatite mouthwash will effectively freshen your breath and fight plaque while working to detoxify your mouth and gums. Unlike conventional mouthwash, premium hydroxyapatite mouthwash is free of sulfates (like sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS), artificial colors, artificial flavors, and preservatives. Instead, it’s full of naturally sourced and derived ingredients like the ones listed below. high-quality hydroxyapatite: how do you know your oral care products contain high-quality hydroxyapatite? The brand should be able to show you how effective their hydroxyapatite is. We sent our proprietary hydroxyapatite formula, Hydroxi™, to a trusted third-party lab, and the results we received show how effective it is. The data collected revealed that our blend outperformed the competition, effectively repairing and remineralizing damaged enamel better than other leading sensitive formulas. If (or when) you see Davids sell hydroxyapatite mouthwash, you can smile bright knowing it contains high-quality hydroxyapatite. xylitol: your hydroxyapatite mouthwash should also contain xylitol, an ingredient that works hand-in-hand with hydroxyapatite to tame bacteria and nurture your oral microbiome. As hydroxyapatite delivers essential minerals to your enamel, xylitol works to stimulate saliva, reduce dry mouth, nurture a healthy pH in your mouth, and “starve” bad bacteria for a balanced oral microbiome. glycerin: alongside xylitol, glycerin stimulates saliva flow to reduce dry mouth. Healthy salivary flow fights bad bacteria, neutralizes harmful acids, starts the digestive process, enhances your taste, and so much more! Keep an eye out for vegetable glycerin in your hydroxyapatite mouthwash. sodium bicarbonate: also known as baking soda, sodium bicarbonate neutralizes harmful acids to help your microbiome flourish and give you fresh breath. zero alcohol: by remaining alcohol-free, hydroxyapatite mouthwash won’t wipe out beneficial organisms in your oral microbiome. Because hydroxyapatite mouthwash doesn’t have alcohol, you can avoid that burning, stinging, or that sticky cotton mouth feeling that alcohol-filled mouthwash often causes. Remember, hydroxyapatite mouthwash is a great addition to your oral care routine, but it’s not a replacement or a root-cause solution to any of your oral care issues. In addition to hydroxyapatite mouthwash, make sure you have the best toothpaste, floss, bamboo toothbrush, and stainless steel tongue scraper in your oral care routine too. buy now.

Studies show a direct link between oral health and systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, respiratory illness, chronic inflammation, cognitive decline, and more. This might sound scary, but we encourage you to consider it an opportunity rather than a reason to worry! A consistent, diligent oral care routine can help set your mouth, body, and mind up for long-term health. Don’t worry, our next section will cover the details of an optimal oral care routine. your microbiome(s) To better understand the connection between oral health and systemic health, let’s look at your oral microbiome. Your mouth is home to a bustling world of bacteria, each species playing a unique role in your health (some for better, others for worse). When your oral microbiome is balanced, the good bacteria can keep the bad bacteria in check while aiding digestion, immune function, and mental clarity (through the gut-brain axis). But when there’s an imbalance in your oral microbiome and the bad bacteria take over, it can lead to bad breath, oral health issues, inflammation, imbalance in your gut microbiome, and other systemic conditions. How does this imbalance happen? There’s a wide range of causes, some of which include diet, exercise, sleep habits, genetics, your oral care routine, the ingredients in your self-care products, and so much more. Because we’re a holistic oral care company that creates high-performing natural oral care products, we’ll focus on your oral care routine and its role in maintaining a healthy balance in your mouth and body. Unlike chemical products that aim to wipe out the bacteria in your mouth altogether, our products are made with non-toxic, rigorously-researched, nature-derived ingredients (like nano-hydroxyapatite) that can help to nurture this delicate balance of bacteria to optimize your oral and overall health. mental health and mindfulness We mentioned the gut-brain connection above, so let’s dive deeper. Did you know that your oral health has the power to impact your mood, influence your mental health, and inspire mindfulness? And we’re not just talking about how a bright smile can boost your confidence. Your oral microbiome is very closely linked with your gut microbiome. After all, everything you swallow (including bacteria and other microorganisms) ends up in your gut! Research tells us that your gut microbiome can directly impact your mental health since the bacteria in your gut play a key role in absorbing nutrients, balancing your hormones, releasing neurotransmitters (like serotonin and glutamate), and so much more. Experts have found at least 13 strains of gut bacteria linked to depression. On top of this mouth-gut-mind connection, your oral care routine gives you time to practice mindfulness. How many other rituals do you perform daily for (at least) two minutes? It’s the perfect time to slow down, breathe deeply, unclench your muscles, tune into your senses, and truly relax. Daily mindfulness can calm your anxiety, improve clarity, and relax your nervous system. It’s an ideal opportunity to welcome a fresh start every single day. hone your holistic oral care routine Now that we’ve covered why oral care is important for nurturing your overall health, let’s talk about our favorite holistic oral care routine. hydrate: simple, but effective! Experts recommend about 11 cups (nearly 3 liters) of water daily for women and 16 cups (nearly 4 liters) daily for men. This number can increase based on many factors, like if the weather is hot or you exercise regularly. eat a mouth-friendly diet: focus on nutrient-dense whole foods with plenty of protein, calcium, fiber, and other micronutrients. Limit sugary, starchy, acidic, sticky, and crunchy foods (and drinks) as much as possible. schedule 6-month check-ins with your dentist: your hygienist can deep clean your teeth, and your dentist can identify issues early…which is key for your long-term oral and overall health. As we mentioned, many diseases start in the mouth, and you want to catch them early. floss daily: if you skip flossing, you miss out on cleaning 30% of your teeth! These tight crevices are the perfect place for bacteria to thrive and damage your enamel, so you’ll want to clean them thoroughly and regularly. brush twice daily: diligent brushing with premium toothpaste (like Davids) works to break down plaque, fight bacteria, nurture gum health, freshen your breath, polish your teeth, and more. Extra props if you use our hydroxyapatite toothpaste which contains nanoparticles that work to repair and remineralize your enamel to soothe sensitivity and protect against damaging bacteria. tongue scrape: bad bacteria love to live on your tongue’s soft, porous surface. But you can tame those beasts by scraping your tongue daily. Not only will it help to nourish a balanced microbiome, but it’ll give you a fresh feeling you didn’t know you were missing! swish with hydroxyapatite mouthwash: this gives your mouth an extra dose of nano-hydroxyapatite! It also helps you maintain a healthy microbiome balance. Unlike conventional mouthwash full of sterilizing chemicals and artificial dyes, hydroxyapatite mouthwash works to “starve” bad bacteria without wiping out the good bacteria, so you get a fresh clean that nurtures your oral microbiome. What’s the hype about hydroxyapatite, anyway? This remineralizing hero ingredient has taken the oral care world by storm, and we have no doubt it’ll continue to do so in 2025. If you want a fresh start in the new year, look no further than our proprietary blend of nano-hydroxyapatite with naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients called Hydroxi™. fresh start spotlight: Hydroxi™ Hydroxi™ is our proprietary blend of nano-hydroxyapatite with carefully selected, high quality, naturally sourced and naturally derived ingredients. What do we mean by that? It’s our unique nano-hydroxyapatite based formula that took a lot of careful consideration and expertise to create, and its performance speaks volumes. It works to remineralize your enamel to soothe any sensitivity and reveal your brightest, healthiest smile. When we released our first hydroxyapatite toothpaste (formulated with Hydroxi™), we submitted samples to one of the largest and most trusted third-party laboratories specializing in oral care product testing. We also submitted samples of competing sensitive toothpastes, including Apagard Premio, Boka, Colgate Sensitive, Risewell, Sensodyne Pronamel, and Toms Sensitive. All numerical and photo lab evidence showed that Hydroxi™ outperformed the competition by effectively repairing “holes” in the enamel to relieve sensitivity. Check out the photos for yourself! What better way to start strong, bright, and fresh in 2025 than with Hydroxi™?

tooth be told: five surprising culprits and solutions every parent should know

When it comes to your child’s smile, there’s so much to think about to protect their oral health during these critical years…even beyond brushing and flossing. From sneaky sugars hiding in healthy snacks to surprising habits that can weaken enamel, tooth troubles can sometimes start with habits and things you least expect. Luckily, understanding these common (yet surprising) culprits can help you take proactive steps to protect your kids oral health. Let’s explore five sneaky culprits and how you can avoid them…with the help of our kids toothpaste, of course! 1: sneaky sugars and acids in healthy snacks While avoiding sugary drinks and candy might seem obvious, sometimes it’s the healthy, whole-food snacks that can sneakily impact your child’s teeth. Sugary, sticky snacks like dried fruit, fruit snacks, granola bars, flavored yogurts, and more often contain lots of sugar that can bind to their enamel. Not only do these sticky, gooey foods stick to their teeth….they also trap bacteria. This gives bacteria a prime place to thrive and weaken your little one’s enamel. To promote oral care for kids, we recommend they rinse their mouths (at the very least) or brush their teeth with kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste after consuming these sticky, sugary snacks. We also encourage you to examine nutrition labels, check out the sugar content, and swap for better options like real fibrous fruit (crunchy fruits often have a “scrubby” effect), nuts, and cheese. 2: skipping water after meals We place so much emphasis on flossing and brushing with kids toothpaste, but the truth is that the “in-between” time is just as important when it comes to oral care for kids. Drinking water, especially during and after meals, can help to flush bad bacteria, food, debris, and acids from your little one’s teeth. Adequate water intake also works to prevent dry mouth, a condition that allows bacteria to flourish more than usual. Did you know that more than half of all children and adolescents in America are not hydrated enough? Without drinking enough water, food particles, acids, and sugar can linger on your kid’s teeth, which can increase the risk of plaque buildup and enamel damage. To avoid this, we recommend leading by example and staying on top of your own hydration! You can also incentivize your little ones to maintain healthy hydration habits by giving them a fun reusable water bottle. Make water their go-to drink throughout the day and save sodas, juices, and sweetened milks for special occasions. 3: pacifiers, sippy cups, and thumb sucking Research shows that prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, and drinking from sippy cups can lead to many kids oral health complications down the road. These complications can include poor jaw development, crooked teeth, a bad/misaligned bite, a narrow palate, and more. How old is too old for thumb-sucking? This study found that the most significant problems occur when children continue to suck their thumb or pacifier beyond four years old. Most little ones will naturally grow out of thumb-sucking between ages two and four. But if they show no signs of stopping around three years old, dental professionals recommend stepping in to stop the habit. Whether it’s a thumb, pacifier, or sippy cup, when the time comes to “step in”, we have a few recommendations to help them wean. You can try keeping track of triggers, implementing a reward system (like introducing a new fun kids toothpaste flavor), using open “big kid” cups, replacing the habit with a toy they can squeeze or fidget with, or in difficult cases…resorting to gloves. You can also try enlisting help from a dental professional to reason with them (we know reasoning with a little one is easier said than done). Whatever approach you choose, don’t give up! When it comes to oral care for kids, these early years and habits are critical to their long-term oral and overall health. 4: warm milk at bedtime Warm milk before bed is a soothing tradition that dates back thousands of years! While milk has many mental and physical benefits for growing kids that extend far beyond sleep, it also has pretty substantial sugar content. Giving them milk before bed (especially after they’ve brushed their teeth) or giving them a bottle of milk to take to bed allows sugar to linger on their teeth all night long. These sugars feed bad bacteria, which can lead to plaque buildup and enamel erosion. To avoid this, try giving them water before bed (and solidifying this habit early) and brushing their teeth with kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste to help remineralize their enamel. All of our kids toothpaste formulas are made with intentional ingredients that fight bacteria, scrub their teeth, and nurture their oral and overall health. Our kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste contains added nano-hydroxyapatite particles to replenish essential minerals in their enamel, from the inside out. 5: brushing too hard (or with the wrong toothpaste) It’s easy for little ones to think that aggressive brushing will clean their teeth better, but it can actually lead to enamel and gum damage. On the same note, using kids toothpaste that’s too abrasive or full of chemicals can harm their vulnerable mouths too. To avoid this, try explaining to your kid(s) that aggressive brushing is harmful….just like if they brush their hair too aggressively! Instead, encourage them to focus on small, gentle, circular motions on every individual tooth. We also recommend getting them a safe and effective kids toothpaste from our lineup. Our kids toothpaste options are formulated with gentle, effective ingredients that fall well within the ADA’s safe recommendations for Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA). On top of that, our toothpastes are made with ingredients that are sourced and derived from nature. Our formulas do not contain fluoride, sulfates, animal-derived ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. With options like our mild mint toothpaste, orange vanilla kids hydroxyapatite toothpaste, and strawberry watermelon toothpaste…you can find a fun flavor that you and your little one(s) can enjoy for years to come. buy now.
